I strongly think selecting your captain, and vice captain are just publicity stuff. Something the team, and the fans might get a boost out of for a month or two. Then the whole commotion dies down til you select a new capt, and v-capt.
I think it just has a short term effect on things, but I don't take them seriously. I mean, there ARE a couple of vets in a team who DO have stats that can fit a captain as well. So it this captain-selecting, just a publicity joke, or is it something worth looking at seriously?
i feel it should and does have a long term effect far more important than the short term PR (player reaction) affects.
Recall that before FM08, there was no media effect associated with the choice of captaincy (which was just off the tactics screen) and so there was no perceivable short term effect.
My opinion is that a young-to-mid-age player who will become an integral part of the team is always favourable to an old player (think Gerrard taking over at liverpool years ago as opposed to say Hyppia being appointed just because he was old). However, good young mental players are hard to come by at lower clubs and so sometimes it is just about putting faith in a senior player and switching every couple of years until a good youth prospect comes along (should be at least 22 IMO).
I think that it does have a major effect game to game and long term.
In my second season at FC Bayern I had Lucio as captain and we were doing really really well but when I left him out or he got injured and Klose came in as captain the form dipped noticeably and Klose found it tough.
While losing Lucio in certain matches wasn't desireable he wasn't a top rater only averaging 7.12 whilst his back up Ismael was on 7.35.
I noticed a real change in form when he came back in.
One question though, is a player you sign, with a 20 for influence a better choice than a player who has been at the club long term with an influence of 14 or so?
Im managing United and into my third season. I had Neville as captain and Giggs as vice. I am past the half way stage of the season now and neither Giggs or Neville have played all that much. Neville about 5 starts and a handful of sub appearances, and Giggs only a couple of starts, but they are still the appointed captains.
In actual fact Ferdinand and Rooney make up the captaincy.
Both Neville and Giggs' contracts are up at the end of next season, but I really do not think I will be playing them next season. I was not even planning on playing them this season but injuries and int call ups forced my hand. Neville can still perform, as can Giggs... for about 20 minutes.
So should I be declaring new captains early? Or wait till they leave the club?

Perhapse it would be a good addition if the current captain/vice captain could decide they want to stand down as captain or players can declare they would be interested/not interested in being a captain.
This could affect the players performance in that even if they have an influence rating of 20 but they have declared that they don't want to be captain their influence in games will deminish.
The captain for my local side Exeter steped down as captain the other day and the next game he played was the best he'd had all season because of the burden lifted off of him by standing down.
When you change the captain at the beginning of the season it sometimes has a slight detrimental effect on the person being replaced, but only for a couple of games. Their slight concern goes to "thinks he's make a better captain than xxxxxxxxx".
As long as the captain you choose is one of the better players at the club and has a high influence stat the othe players are usually happy.
My big problem in coming up through the leagues was when I signed a big player with big influence, I'd replace the old captain. But the effects were minimal.
I think it would be more important halfway through the season.
In my current game I'm playing with Crewe about two thirds of the way through the second season.
In my first season I was having a torrid time up until January sitting at about 13th in the league.
I brought in a new centre back in the Transfer Window and promptly made him my captain, we went on to miss out on the play-offs on GD on the last day of the season. I've kept the same captain and we're now sitting pretty at the top of the league. As someone else has already said, although not my best player, when left out the team performances drop considerably.
I think this is a good example of both how it can effect a game in both the long and short term.
I appointed a 21 year old captain of my Whitley Bay team and he said he felt it was too much pressure at his age...I could see his point, but since almost the entire rest of the squad where 4-5 years younger than him I guess he drew the short straw!
