Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default What styles/change do you make when playing away from home?

This isn't a rant about losing away from home or asking for tactic. i have been struggling to win away from home but not draw. So i was wondering does anyone change their formation completely or just style of passing,width,etc...

I changed to short to keep more possesion but ovbiously I create less chances. what do u all do?

Nobody replying?

I changed to short passing but would a direct and quick tempo be better to play on the counter.ONly problem is away from home its suicidal to play wide I think.

Do u recommend short and slow away from home to keep possesion or fast and direct. Also when does width kick in, is it with ball or without?

Yes - short passing and slow tempo will make you keep posession more.

The down side to this is that your build-up play is slow (obviously) and if the opposition's defence is well organised then you will find it harder to break it down resulting in fewer chances on goal.

Direct passing and quick tempo will make your players play balls into the box 'directly' as quick as possible instead of playing fancy one touch football all the way up the pitch, which obviously takes time. This will naturally mean you have more attempts on goal but by putting balls straight into the box you will have less posession due to interceptions or defenders clearances.

If you are playing on the counter attack then you want to be swift and direct in posession and create chances before the opposition gets time to get back to it's defensive positions - therefore you should use direct passing and quick tempo.

Counter attacking also works well with a defensive team mentality and a deep defensive line - these both help to draw the opposition on to you and pull their players out of their defensive positions leaving space for your counter attacking players to sprint into.

As for width - the general concensus of opinion is that you should play a little narrower away from home (personally I tend to use a setting of 14 with my Man Utd team when playing away).

Also, my understanding is that width is a constant setting (ie with & without the ball). When the opposition has posession you can keep your defenders closer together by reducing width... and vica versa.

Hope this helps...

Do you Counter Attack in your home games or not ?

I've had a lot of trouble with away games and i'm trying to create a tactic with some of the info from James8. I'm just a bit sceptical about counter attacking. When i tick it off... my team keeps posession but i have a hard time to score. When its ticked i tend to be more dangerous but more vulnerable.

I disagree. You can play slow tempo with counter attacking. To define the tempo in the game's terms- is how often the players will try and launch attacks, so, throu balls and crosses and long shots will be attempted more with higher tempo. Counter attacking itself will tell your players to suck them in and then launch an attack.

Again this is wrong you can cleary see it through the highlights. Width has an effect only with the ball. Playing wide will give you more options but keep you valnrable to counter attacking.

I dont play counter attacking away from home. I play normal mentslity and not defnsive and counter so i dont just sit back being attacked.

Also thanks for the tips james8. i do play narrow, short and mixed focus passing away from home.

If i'm playing away from home against a decent team i usually play fairly defensive with a deep defensive line and counter attack,i've managed to pick up a few good results this way,as for passing and tempo it depends on what my opposition are playing and their style of play.

I dont agree, playing narrower does deny the opposition space through the middle forcing them out wide.

leroy1883 seems right. When I play narrower space is noticable tighter, also long diagonal passes are cut out easier.
