It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Crap defender as a Target man

Hello fellow FM07 fans.

Maybe dozens of you have found it out already, but I have recently discovered that using a crap defender (marking and tackling are both only 7) as a target man does wonders for my team.

The only things he's good at are heading, positioning and jumping, which are all 19/20. Furthermore he is 1m91 tall, so he is quite the big fella.

I usually bring him on around the 60th minute, no matter what the scoreline is. He usually wins 95% of headers and is especially deadly with free kicks aimed at "best header".

His stats can be found here:

As you can see, his stats are not that impressive, except for the heading skillz. And yes, he's a regen.

Not only did he manage to score a few goals, the team as a whole seems to play quite well whenever he enteres the field.

I was just curious if there are many others who have had the same experience with target men. It seems to me that as long as they are tall and have good heading skills, they are miracle workers!

Not a bad plan.

Similar to Man city shoving david James up front last season.

Macc Town used defender Dave Morley in a similar way a couple of seasons ago because we had a real injury crisis. Changed the game a couple of times for us.

Addition:

The tactics I use are a 4-4-2 Diamond. I usually employ a fast striker next to him, passing set to direct and focussed down both flanks to deliver lots of crosses. Width is 18 and tempo is 20.

Might give that a try tonight, as I've an abundance of sh*te defenders with crap stats in my reserve team at the moment! shove him upfront hey presto instant effective hitman!

A true target man will be better as he'll have high secondary stats. But if ur short on options I can see a DC working.

Remeber you're mainly looking for:

Heading
Jumping
Strength
Work rate
Aggression
Positioning

I also find most phsyical attributes help.

I had succes with a defender as backup targetman a couple of versions back - when my tactics really depended on one.

Later versions I have been playing more flexible, so havent tried it, but if it is anything like back then, he should get plenty assists.

I've got Micah Richards for my Villa team, I often stick him up front as he has the phyiscal stats, (Jumping & Strength).

Seems to work a bit for me, especially since Villa have some lethal pace up top.

By the way, that player in the opening post is not a regen I believe, just very young.

Try retraining him as a striker perhaps?

His physical stats are all round decent, his finishing and passing could grow to the 15 mark, and composure and off the ball will probably hit at least this.

Eventually you could turn him into a beast of a striker.
