I always try to come up with my own tactic on FM, but have adopted a couple of ideas from these forums. My current Norwich tactic is an abridged 4-5-1 adopting some of the arrowhead thesis. it lookf something like this:
/ FC \
/ \
AML | AMR
MC
DMC DMC
LB CB CB RB
GK
The tactic seems to work well, obviously a good targetman and pacy AM's are essential but it creates a lot of chances and is quite defensively sound, even with an almost unchanged backline from the Championship to the Prem.
The only thing I am frustrated by is that, everytime the opponent's text box comes up on the match screen they seem to have a shot on goal. I'm allowing around 15 shots per game, though only maybe half will go on target and one or two will go in.
I put 2 dms in place to try and curb this but, despite them having numerous tackled and interceptions, the opposition still seem to have the freedom to shoot too often.
How can I stop this, I have tried my DMCs on low through to high closing down and it seems to make little or no difference.
When you are watching the highlights where are the majority of shots coming from? Are they coming from crosses into the box, through balls in the middle or long shots? Also, do you have forward runs set on your full backs and DMS's and what is your team mentality and width?
Let me know and I might be able to give you some ideas.
Forward runs for both are set to rarely and width is right in the middle.
All the team have a different mentality but my DMFs are usually around the 4/5 mark.
Unfortunately I use the slowest laptop known to man so only really do replays of goals occasionally but most seem to be from a player running with the ball then shooting as opposed to crosses etc
Without seeing all your tatcics it's hard to say. Really, you need to watch more highlights to analyse the problems.
Make sure your two CB'S do not have high closing down or man marking.....this seems to draw them out of position far too often. Have your two DMF'S closing down on the first or second notch of often.
I also recommend having the rest of your midfield closing down quite high and getting your wingers to man mark the AI's wingers. As they are high up the pitch in your formation they will not track back otherwise.
It's also importat to make sure all your individual mentalities are not to far from each other, no more than 1 or 2 notches. eg defenders on3, DMF on 4, MC 5, AM 6 etc. This will make sure this isn't a big gap between your defense and midfield for the opposition to exploit.
All good points, the back four tend to get high ratings so I'm not massively concerned about personell but I think I do need to close the gap between midfield and defense
