I constantly chop and change forcing players out even if they are one of my better players for the sake of change. I also like to keep a small squad of hugely versatile and relatively young players. Finally I love throwing my youth products (Which seem to have dried up recently) into the deep end.
like you I like versitile players especially AM RLC, FC and D RLC. I too like to fill my team up with young players but I only sell my star players when the offer is to good to refuse or when they get alittle older.
I usually find myself spending a lot of my transfer budget on young players. It is extremely rare for me to sign a player that's 28 or above. I tend to sign players that I don't really need, just because I think they are a good prospect, so I loan them out. It annoys me because I can't turn down a bargain, even though I know I should use the money to strengthen my first team.
I usually dont like to spend over-the-odds to get a player. I generally get a figure in my mind for a player and rarely ever go over that. I see who the player is and then decide what price I'm willing to go upto. If I cant get him for that, I dont bother signing him. As for selling, I try not to sell a lot of my first-teamers unless they want to leave. I play as Arsenal and Van Persie, Fabregas, Toure, Clichy & Rosicky are players who I never sell whatever the price.
Also, I always play my B team in FA Cup and Carling Cup games. These are not necessarily my reserves but players who are on "rotation". I try to ensure that every one of my players gets atleast 25 games every season, if not more. Keeps them all happy.
Dont like to buy anyone over 26 mostly. The only exception is Kaka who I've only ever bought once but I would buy everytime if I got him for the right price. If I buy Barzagli its right at the start of the game else I leave him alone. Try to stick to the Arsenal youth as much as possible. Also, after players reach 28 or above and those that I dont mind selling, I'll let them go for a cheap price if need be as long as its to a club outside the Premiership. I dont like to play against them.
My thoughts are the same as wengers, except i like to sign 1 worldclass star every 2-3 years to spice things up.
In my experience playing FM, i can turn a undeveloped youth prospect into a wonderkid in 2-3 years and turn a prospect into a worldclass player or leading star within 5 years ;-) my joy comes from this.
One of the biggest successes was managing Newcastle where mu squad was 25 strong, 19 have been developed by me ;-) 13 of those were homegrown. I won the title for years
