I agree with the previous poster that transfer policy has to change to suit current club.
I only have one rule that I apply to all clubs and that is...never under any circumstances buy anyone over the age of 28.
Currently managing Aston Villa and I have a really solid first 11, so my focus is on imroving the overall squad and having decent back up.

Similar to other posters, I buy to strengthen positions, I always buy at least one striker and then go to the kids.
I only ever buy players who are 27+ if they are signed on FREES, ie out of contract. You can get real quality that way.

My squads are always assembled like this:
GK
GK
GK (Youngster)
DR
DRC
DC
DC
DLC
DC (Youngster)
ML
MLC
MR
MRC
D/DM
MC
AMC/FC
ST
ST
ST
That way I have a relativley small squad and everyone gets a game, I try to buy players to build a squad like this.
In terms of transfer policy, I like to get about 3 bosmans a season that will improve the squad, 3 or 4 yout talents and maybe a veteran to tutor the youth and provide solid back up.
If you play in league 1/Championship, the french freebies are fantastic, such as Yohann Bourillon, Rolland Vieira, and Pierre-Fanfan.

I like to have a small team. No more than 20 players in the first team. If a player isn't worth a first team place then i let him prove himself in the reserves but nobody seem's to get a look in with Henri Saivet in there lol. (He's got promoted to the 1st team now though)
I like to buy players depending on where my Ass Man says we're lacking. Its usually the midfield but i've got alot of tallent im grooming so i'm not bothered about that.
I'll spend around 20-30 on a superstar but never anything more. I once spent 50mil on Kuzmanovich but he's been immense for my Utd Team. Just the man i needed to keep the ball in that area. Already almost paid for himself with 2 ECC wins and 2 League titles with him getting MoM in both finals

Forgot to add about selling players lol.
Will never sell Rooney, Ronaldo, Ferdinand, Vidic or Evra. No matter what the money offered. They're just too good.
My youngsters are a no no as well. I give them till 24 before selling on because thats when you know they're not going to improve if they're not good. I try to keep transfers to a minimum so not to mess up the squad moral, they don't take to big headed superstars coming in thinking they're the dogs b0ll0cks lol. Its funny cause Rooney is my captain and he's already told Messi that he's got a lot to prove |

I use Spurs, and I try to get as many English players as possible, though I do have to compliment them with some foreigners. But I'd say about 75% of my squad is British

20 man squad at the moment, average age of only 22! Sold of anyone over 27 as soon as I got in, going to build a team of world beaters. I hope.

Well playing as a league 1 team (irl) who i've taken to the prem...... my transfer budget differs from everyone elses.....first I will most likely sell a first teamer (if it includes a sell on clause), I always sign free transfers (even if they don't get a game----> do it purely for profit) and secondly only sign players over 23 if they are on loan or are under £2mill. With this I have managed to create a mid- prem team from a league 1 team in 3 seasons and have 4 wonderkids in my ranks (most of them----> most likely to get sold to keep clubs financial state healthy)

Best way to keep your job there. Just think about the money lol. Helps to win stuff too but if you keep the finances in touch as well as screwing up you can usually keep your job longer than if you were in debt and screwing up
