Well I decided to give 03/04 one last blast before the new game comes out. I opted to try and do something i'd failed at in 3 previous careers, and that's take East Stirling to SPL glory. (See the title wasn't a typo after all! :cool
I've only added three freebies to the squad, deeming the other donkeys my scout found to be no better than what I already have on slave wages. Also bagged one decent striker on loan from Celtic reserves.
I've gotten to the end of November and I'm bloody confused. My tactical system is a slight tweaking of the bog standard options, and it's taken me to glory of sorts. We won the Challenge Cup.
On the other hand, it's utter crap in league matches, netting us just 14 points in 13 games thus far. Weird huh?
Still there's hope yet. Everyone else is equally inconsistent. We're 1 point off the bottom, and just 8 from the top.
The Shire may triumph yet. (Especialy if we can sign a couple of those devious little hobbit guys. )
Isn't it amazing how ungrateful some people can be? I take a bunch of nobodies, turn 'em into a promotion winning team (we missed out on the title by a point), win the Challenge Cup, and get to the Quarter Finals of the FA Cup, taking Hibs to the wire, (they scored a winner in injury time ) and what do I get?
The miserable wretches all want pay rises or they're off. The cheek of it. I mean. what's wrong with playing the game you love for a tenner a week and a free pie?
Well, i'll show 'em. I've got transfer money to spend in the summer. A whopping 24 grand. You'd be amazed what you can buy for 24 grand in Scotland. A couple of strikers, 3 defenders, and a winger. Or alternatively a coffee and a souvenir knapkin from the Parliament building.
So onward to Division 2 it is, with fully half the squad being newbies. Going by past experience, it'll either be a straight breeze through the division, or a misery fest culminating in last day relegation. I'll let ya know.
i had a game with East Stirling (in fact I still play it now) I got them to the 1st division then got the St. Johnsone job I regret it now because East Stirling just beat me 4-0
Frustrating season or what? My bunch of cast offs and kids began like a steam train, storming to a 7 point lead by Christmas. (We'll gloss over the first round cup exits methinks.)
The Hogmany binge must have been a good 'un, because the hangover lasted until February. We some how contrived to take just 2 points in the month of January, and we never got back any kind of consistency after that.
Ended up going down to the wire, but needing other teams to drop points on the last day left us vulnerable. We won, but so did Ayr, and we missed out on promotion by 2 points.
Oh well, the board at least were satisfied, and the fans have total confidence in me. Plus, the majority of the squad are on long term deals now, and are young enough to improve. Next year's Division 2 title beckons?
With the addition of just 4 new squad members, all young, all released by SPL clubs, my East Stirling team had a great season. We were top almost the whole year, but looked to have thrown away the title by conceding 2 injury time goals to our nearest rivals in the run in, allowing them to slip above us.
Fortunately, they then contrived to lose both of their remaining games, and handed us back the Second Division Championship. So Division 1 awaits.
Undoubted highlight of the season was a Cup QF win over Celtic, though the Gods were mean and gave us Rangers in the semi, thus ending the double dream.
League Cup was a non event, losing in RD 2, but we got to the Challenge Cup Final, losing 2-0 with a poor display.
Onward and upward, though I now have a 6 figure bank balance, which feels awfully strange for East Stirling.
A very solid first season in Division 1. My East Stirling boys were never out of the top 3, but were also never really in the hunt for the title and the sole promotion spot. Runaway winners Aberdeen lost their last 3 games and still were 9 points clear of us in second spot.
Just as well the league season was good, because we went out of all 3 cups at the first opportunity.
All but 3 of my squad are set to stay on, and I now have a transfer kitty of £300,000 plus. Hopefully one or two key signings will give us the edge we need to get to the promised land of the SPL next time around.
