if your hosting a game, and clients may not have decent (or any) virus software, firewalls etc, does htat mean i may get infected through their machine or is it completely safe?

As long as your virus software and firewall is fine, then you shouldn't get infected with anything.

can you explain what a client is actually doing, are they just communicating with the software on the pc or just the router? if you get what i mean

I don't know the technical side of it, but when a user puts your IP address into their FM game to connect, FM on your end is transmitting data to their end on what FM is doing and what data is being used.
