Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Defensive formations a waste of time??

I've been tinkering around with trying to develop a 4-4-2 and have had some success so far being second in League as West Ham after 7 games with only one defeat to Liverpool whilst using an attacking 4-4-2.

However I also tried tinkering about with that formation to make a defensive formation with men behind the ball, counter attacking, flooding the midfield and having barrows everywhere, that kind of thing.

Half time in a League Cup Match away to Arsenal and I'm 3-0 down with them having 40,,,,yes,,,40 shots on goal to my 2!!!!

So I revert to my 4-4-2 attacking and nearly pull it off going down 4-3 after extra time with Carlton Cole getting a hat-trick... Yes I did mean Carlton Cole!!!

It's not the first time I've tried defensive counter attacking formations and I have come to the conclusion that they are a waste of time. You just invite trouble and if the Al can't pick holes through you it reverts to 30 yard specials that fly into the top corner.

Is it me or is attack the best way to go in FM2008?

I agree it does seem attacking formations are easier to come up with plus I think is also has something to do with the players we buy.

You mentioned about teams hitting long goals past your team. You might want to try changing the mentallity of your MCs as well as there closing down. A very low mentallity (1-3) and high closing down(15 ish) will naturally put your players outside your box and should close down anyone who recieves the ball in that area.

I agree, im developing a set of 442 tactics and having a problem creating a counter attacking team for when the AI adopts the 424 formation or for when im playing away to tough opposition.

I found that playing my standard 442 against tougher opposition works better so I have ditched the counter-attacking one I was working on for a adapted away tactic not so focused on defending.

Ive yet to find a tactic that counters the 424 end of game AI super attack mode also. It bugs me I cant do much about it they always pressure and more often than not score in the last 10mins even though ive had 30 shots by this point and only winning 2-0!!!

I'm using a 3-3-2-2 which is heavy defense, only conceeded 3 goals so far halfway through my 1st season and lost none. If I don't win I draw, I need to develop a more attacking version to combat the draws more however.
