It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default A Question About Defesive Mentality

I'm of the belief that IRL a defensive unit when playin a back 4 should remain in a line and act as if they are all connected by a length of rope. Does this translate as having all your defenders on the same mentality setting??

I remember an old manager of mine using that 'connected by a bit of rope' theory.

I dont think you can do it as the idea was if the left full back attacked the other 3 defenders would come round and make a back 3. (well thats how he done it!)

It didnt work too well either IIRC

If they should play as i unit then they have to have low closing down and no forward runs or they will be out off position all the time

This can“t be done in FM as far is I know. When my team is in possession, the fullbacks push up a bit higher than DCs, even if they are on the same mentalities and low closing down and no forward runs.

Would be funny to see Not really, it would be very easy to tear such defense apart. A solid back four implies that everybody controls his zone (player if on man marking), knows his move on "what if" basis. Now, of course football is not chess, so there is no way you can predict every possible situation. So players should understand each other very well, anticipate situation, GK should organise defense, etc. Any attempt to "fix" players' position relatively to others (i.e. keep line or keep distanse between paleyers etc.) will lead to failure.
