This is interesting. I'm slowly coming to similar conclusions: the key for success in this game is SPACE for attacking players and focusing your attacking efforts through them.
For example:
-My 4-4-1-1 tactic with Valencia was briefly successful particularly due to my AMC (Silva) having lots of space against the teams I was playing. Then I had a game against Murcia - I was obviously strong favourites. However Murcia played a 4-4-2 diamond hence Silva was stifled by their DM and had little space, hence he couldn't get the ball to my striker. My MC's did have space but could only shoot from distance and I drew 0-0.
-Playing with Blackburn (4-4-2) against Spurs (4-2-3-1 narrow, with the 3 AMC's) at home I was making little progress and the game had very few SOT's. At about 60 mins (with the score 2-2 thanks to 3 set piece goals and a fluke goal for me) I decided to get my MC's to hold back, told my FB's to get forward and focused my passing down the flanks. I started getting lots of SOT's and I think I would have got a goal with some tempo adjustment and if I had made the change earlier. My wingers found themselves in acres of space when they got the ball.
-I conceded lots of goals against Man City's 4-4-1-1 formation with a flat 4-4-2 as Elano (AMC) was finding lots of space and my defence was being drawn by Bianchi (ST). I also noticed lots of chances when I played Newcastle for Van der Vaart (AMC) in a 4-3-1-2 formation (with 3 MC's and sarrows on the strikers).
Conclusions:
-Formation changing is discouraged by many but may be the easiest way to generate space in the game. We should also consider the opposite if we want to defend more in a game. So in the most mundane of tactical situations:
<If we want to attack and the opponent is playing a flat 4-4-2 in theory playing a 4-4-2 diamond would create space for the DM and AMC (who is likely to be a creative player and could work wonders). Also consider 4-3-1-2.
<If we want to defend against a flat 4-4-2 playing a flat 4-4-2 with tight man marking should be effective. If we want to defend against a tactic employing a good AMC then play a DM to mark him.
Formation seems to be the simplest way of creating space but there are other ways - in particular good use of free roles, FWR's, width, and hold up ball. I think this may be one of the keys to the match engine (note it also needs to go alongside decent tactical work in other areas). If this is indeed the case I think the game may be alot easier than we think.
Note this is all theory partly based on recent memory and experience, it may not actually work, but I'll give it a try and do a more detailed thread on it if I think it really is the key.

Amazing transformation since I started going with a simple 4-4-2 normal/attacking or defending depending on the opposition, it really could be that we have all been thinking too hard...I'd like some more guidance as to how to play against 5-3-2 sides etc

| I am over the moon that I am not the only one who has come to this conclusion.

WAs that sarcasm Leroy? dw
Perhaps that statement was obvious enough, but I never seemed to focus so much on it in 07, since physical attributes ruled the roost so a TM didn't need space so out jump his opponent and wingers and strikers didn't need space to dribble past their opponents.
It's only now occuring to me though how much simpler it is to create space and how effective this appears to be on the 08 match engine.
