Default Training

One particular area of Football Manager that seems to raise debate is that of Training.
There are many ideas as to how to improve its realism and role in the game going forward.

However, with training in its current form, what is a realistic way to approach it? The reason I ask, is that many clubs in the Conference North / South are part time, and therefore in real life will only have a couple of training sessions per week.

I read in the Non League Paper this week that a former pro at Havant & Waterlooville finds this incredibly frustrating as it can take a week or two after a game to work on a set piece they conceded from etc.

This has got me thinking really, as I've started my game and put my players to generally train a couple of times per day. However, I now deem this to be unrealistic. But then how is it implemented with other AI controlled clubs in my division? Are they also having a full week of training?

Obviously I'm not after hints and tips, but wondered what you all felt was the most realistic way to approach it.

CM/FM has never really been good at the part-time model. Don't handicap yourself by going for part-time training when then AI teams will train full-time.

For LLM, training blows.

If you look at the training options and then ask yourself how many of the facilities an LL Team would actually have, like a gymnasium, indoor and outdoor pitch facilities of two sizes, etc., it's unrealistic to devise a training schedule using what's available.

Two choices, as far as I'm concerned...like Michal said, use all the facilities and train them like pros, or put your AssMan in charge of training and hope he's realistic.

Best thing would be to allow for a budget to buy training equipment for the lowest league teams...nick Police cones, use fencing stobs as corner flags, jackets for goalposts, etc.

What's the budget for nicking police cones used for? Bail money?

Training in general is a weak spot IMO, especially at lower levels, where a manager would have most chance of influencing his team's results with good organization and training. It's almost a "set it and forget it" operation, rather than the primary daily function of the football club for much of the week. Until something like a "weekly schedule" is introduced, I fear it will always lack realism.

My policy is that I'm attempting to make the club bigger and get promoted, so I treat the team as full-time and go from there. Like mkus said, why deny yourself something that the AI does?

I've always let my assman take care of the training.. come to think of it, I probably haven't seen the training screen since 01/02

Have to agree with adax. Assman does the training for me as well. I believe it's more realistic since my coach is so crappy, his training is like a pub visit and 10 pints every evening.

I think a lot of people leave training up to their assistants, which I guess goes some way to show how flawed and messy the current system is.

However, I just felt a pang of guilt the other day when I was playing my current game. I know that taking training as though I was at a full time club helps to redress the balance somewhat, I thought it may be considered a little unethical.

Does the fact that your players are part-timers not have an influence, or is that just a cosmetic contract feature?
Could it be that those on part-time contracts only train part time?
