I never turn down the chance to buy a good player, even if I don't need them. When they're promising youngsters I can keep them for longer and then sell with with sell-on clauses, but most free players can be flogged for a profit.
I always buy to TRY to improve my squad. That said, I may buy more than one player for the same position in order to have them compete for the position, provide depth, or in case one doesn't work out.
I'm more of a manager for the long-term. Could never see the point of stop gap solutions or wasting money on players who will barely figure in your plans. That's why I like to implement a youth policy and bring through my own lads

DV,
I don't see this as an either-or. Almost all of my transfers in are under 30, usually under 26. So I am buying for the long term as well.

What I meant to say m8, is that I won't buy someone then sell them on in the near future. That's of course assuming someone doesn't offer me 20-30 million for em (not likely), or if they become unhappy for some reason.
i bring players through as youths, but i snap up bosman journeymen in their final years (the better the reputation the better) on short term contracts in the hope that some of their magic will rub off on the youths in training.
i don't sell players i signed for free - i think it's rude. if they want to go or i need to slash the wage bill i put them on the transfer list for free. makes no difference in the game, but it makes me happier. i hate seeing unhappy players, i feel so guilty. if i have shÃ*t coaches, i'll focus on buying proven players (on loan or via bosman usually). Otherwise i adopt a youth policy, and have a couple of scouts set on scouting youth players throughout the season
