There is nothing wrong with renegotiating contracts per se, but to have a deliberate ploy of signing players to good contracts only to immediately offer a lower wage is, quite frankly, cheating.

what would others do?

If you just joined the club, the player was already there, and you were taking action to ensure the financial stability of the club by controlling the wage bill, then I'd say there's no problem. I think that's realistic enough.
If you had signed him yourself and then immediately exploited the contract change thing, then you'd be contrary to LLaMa ethics, IMHO.

Certain player IRL will accept a pay cut if circumstances dictate, so I'd have no problem in giving a player an extra year for a slightly lower wage.
However, getting them to take 6 pay cuts in a month is basically cheating - in LLM terms anyway.

Thank you all. To be honest, I thought this might be a cheat according the llama spirit, but may be there was a glimmmer of hope it would be considered as a bug rather than a cheat.
So, I guess I have to forget about this 'option'.
BTW, I just signed few new guys in the beggining of my second season with St. Albans and I decided to try 'the option', but none of them wanted to sign new contract with me - not only for less money, but for whatever money (not sure if you understand my pitiful tries to speak and write english). So anyway I guess this won't work in fm 2005.
Final words, pls be merciful this just came up in my mind. These few guys I have signed were all founded by my scouts while they were playing in the conference on loan from league clubs. And may be this is why they accepted to join my club - they were all transfer listed by request (for less money then their actual value), played in lower league clubs (so they weren't first team choice in their clubs). And I am doubtful if they would have join me if they were playing in Watford instead of D&R or in Morecambe instead of Preston, for example. What do you think about this? Please, don't tell me this is a llama cheat too - i'll have to restart my game from the begining...

Exploiting bugs is cheating. But if you didn't know about it at the time, it's ok with us.
