I decided to manage Dorchester after a train I was once on broke down next to their ground and I got to watch 20 minutes of a game they were playing at the time. They play in the Conference South of England.
First Season
Initial thoughts were quite promising, mainly due to two Spanish players on their books of astounding quality for a Conference South side. One an AMC, the other an AMC/FC. There were an abundance of attacking midfielders, which led me to developing new formations to accommodate them all.
I had no money for new players, and had no head room in my wage budget. My scout was sent off to dig up any decent players available for loan. The board expected a respectable league position.
My first formation was not great, and a third of the way through the season and I was hovering around mid-table. A slight adjustment to my tactics, and a few decent loan signings, saw the team creep up the league and I teetered around the lower play off positions for much of the rest of the season. I final good run in the last five matches (thanks to a corker of a striker coming in on loan) saw us finish the season in 4th place.
We reached the Conference South play off final where we met local rivals Weymouth. We’d done the double over them during the season, after which I took great delight at proclaiming my tactical superiority. This almost came back to haunt me in the playoffs, as after we initially took the lead, Weymouth took the initiative and raced to a 2-1 lead. We got a, frankly undeserved, equaliser in the 85th minute. In extra time, the superior fitness of my players told, and we came out 5-2 victors.
In the overall playoff final we met Hinckley of the Conference North. The playoff bug kicked in, so I was forced to go on game holiday (heart problems I justified this as). When I returned, it turned out I had apparently missed a classic of a game, 3-3 after 120 minutes, but…..
Dorchester won on penalties!!!!!
Conference national here we come……
