I don't think that this is as cut and dry as you are making out for the following reasons.
1. I've taken a gamble, as previously stated real life managers do this, the Swede that was in charge of England signed several players for Man City in the summer having never seen them play, as well as the Scottish bloke with the rosy cheeks, correct me if I'm wrong but the bloke currently under investigation for corruption once signed a bloke for Southampton based on the opinion of a former African legend, the said player joined Southampton came on as a sub before being substituted and being released to a much lower division.
2. I haven't used outside knowledge of the game to get the players.
3. I haven't used the player search.
4. With the lack of an option to ask a previous associate for their opinion on a player, I've based my gamble on the league that the team who are offering me the player are in, my opinion is that success rate of this would be similar to real life.
I really don't see what is unrealistic in taking a gamble on a player that has been offered to you? Perhaps this is a grey area, but the advice I've seen for previous grey areas is to think would a real life manager do this? My answer is that it is down to the individual manager as much in FM as it is in real life.
