Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Utilisation of one formation

One thing I havent read much of on here is how people store and use tactics in their own game. Basically what I am planning to do in a new game is hve one basic system that plays to the strengths of my team but to tweak it before every game to suit my opposition. Does anyone else do this and how easy is it to make it work? The main thing I have noticed is people storing many different versions of tactics which to me would confuse my own team and leave them constantly having to adapt.

My approach has until very recently been to create a lot of different tactics,offensive,defensive,home/away and so on. The problem is - it hasnt really worked. Just started a new season and havent changed my formation once, just tweaked team and player instructions before/during matches to suit oppositon and what players i use. So far i have won 11 of 12 matches, and my problem of getting wins away seems gone. So it seems that it might work, but as i said only played 12 matches.

Personally I use one version of a tactic, if I make tweaks to it, i don't bother saving it unless I'm up against a big club like chelsea, then its worth keeping it in the bank.

As Man Utd, I've used a 4-1-3-2 formation for 10 years now. I've only ever changed a few individual instructions between seasons, and it has worked out very well in most cases.

Conversely, as Norwich and ex-Colchester manager, I had 3 tactics within a season, switching around to suit the opposition. Varied success, really.

I find that sticking to one works better, but making smaller changes as and when neccesary. Shaking things up is rarely a good thing IMO.

The only thing I used stored tactics for is "resetting" individual instructions for the first team after using a younger team in a less important game.

You change many of the individual instructions to suit the younger team's strengths and weaknesses, and then load your normal instructions back for the normal team. Saves some time.
