i want to try and get my team playin as close to real life as possible as Arsenal play..
In real life I would say Arsenal play a short passing, very quick, counter attacking style...
however ive read that in fm07 short passing doesnt work well with a high tempo? and that counter attacking should be paired with direct / long passing?
Whats the closest team mentalitys to the way Arsenal play do u think?
thx for your help

| I workes, but it requiers more of your players. They need to be very good to be able to preform a short and quick passing style. So i guess your arsenal team will be able to pull it off. I play a shorter and quick tempo style with my Porto side and it workes just fine. My settings are about 7-8 on the passing scale and about 13-14 on the tempo scale.

Short is from 1-5, so you are not playing short as far as match engine is concerned.

Yes i know, but it is shorted then mixed (10) and are closer to short then direct/long. And the question wasnt if it was short or not, it was if the tempo needed to be matched to the passing. And i was trying to answer the question and give and example of it by saying that in my tactic the sliders differs about 7 steps and it still works just fine.

| And if you read what i wrote in my first post, i dint say i was playing short. I said that i play a shorter (thats shorter then mixed (the default 10 on the slider)) and quick passing style.

i found out by messing around a bit that if you set time wasting to rarely and put everybody to 1 in passing the ball gets zipped about nicely, set tempo to the first slow you come to from mixed(couple clicks to the left of mixed). i put defensive line to 2 clicks above normal,u gotta put players above normal in individual mentality. not too high tho i generally never let any player be more than 3 away from another in mentality. e.g right back 1 click above normal right winger one or two clicks above the right backs and the right sided striker 3 clicks above the right back......i find that the narrower u play the better for short passing as everybody is close together to recieve the ball...anyway with these setting if u watch a full match u can see ur team zipping it about nicely...dont know if thats exactly arsenal but it pretty to watch.tempo can be reduced for a slower build up....there is a definite link between defensive line and ur defenders mentality.if you use a low mentality on ur defenders and normal defensive line they tend to go deep thats why i have nobody below normal mentality in and push up slightly i think you have to push up to play short passing otherwise u barely get out of ur half

arsenal of now is much slower tempo with short passing
the golden days was faster tempo, mostly balls down the sides/left and a 1 - 1 system for strikers with a playmaker behind a striker
also ams, a dm and a controlling cm with attacking fullbacks

I have just been trying to create the arsenal style of play aswell as i think this is the best way to play football.
The way i see it is that arsenal only play at a high tempo when they're on the counter. At all other times they play a slow progressive short passing game. Therefore if im playing at home against a team that i expect to sit back i play on the slowest and shortist passing. This will make sure they play simple balls to the nearest player hardly ever gambling on the the longer pass. Obviously if the other team are sitting back with alot of players behind the ball you dont want to play longer passers as they will go into areas where there are alot more defenders than attackers. Its best to work the ball up the pitch gradually in this situation. The slow build up style of play has to have very good passers of the ball and players that are good on the ball as one poor pass can break up the whole of your attack. I use fabregas or rosicky as my playmaker and when my team gradually works itself to the edge of the oppositions box they usually play a very good ball to the strikers or out wide to open up their defence. The defense will have to push forward and play high up the pitch to support the rest of the teams attack and i close down often so that when i do lose the ball the other team finds it difficult to get the ball clear. Also i have my team width set to wide as this gives players on the ball more time and space and forces the other team to close down further creating gaps in which to pass into.
When playing away from home i play on the counter (Counter attack ticked & mentality changed from attacking to normal or if im playing a team that is expected to beat me i go defensive) but still have short passing. I move the slider further to the right so that its on the highest short passing setting (think its 5 or 6) and match it with the tempo. This i believe tells your team to stick with the short passing unless the counter attack is on where they seem to suddenly get the ball forward quickly (the arsenal style you mentioned). I like to play with slightly longer passing than at home as the other team is likely to be closing down higher up the pitch and it can be dangerous playing a short passing game on the edge of your own box with alot of players closing you down. Instead of using a playmaker I use a targetman which is usually my fast striker (Henry) and tell the team to give him the ball to run onto. I close down less and have a narrower width as this draws the opposition forward so that you can spring the counter.
This is basically the way i play without going into all the other detail. I've gone something like 30 games unbeaten so far or something like that and they're playing some superb football. Sometimes in matches if im winning at home and the other team are starting to attack i switch to my counter attacking formation and this can score me more goals as the other team push forward.
I dont like to use the direct passing option as this seems to give possession away too often. But the counter attack option seems to get your team to pass the ball forward quickly when a good opportuniy arises e.g. when the other team has pushed forward and lost the ball.
