It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Well actually I've changed my mind. Your example aston_martin has made me think.

Natural positions aren't the ones that you start in. As you say Barry was classed as a LB but when he was tried as a LM he showed people that this was probably his best position, or his "natural" position.

I suppose someone could be bought up in an unnatural position and still be very good but then have a go elsewhere and find they are actually better in that postion. Re-training might make a player discover his "true natural" position.

yeah i get what you mean, i personally think that the position ability is wrongly labelled, becuase just becuase somewheres yout natural position doesn't mean it your best, for example i don't play football apart from a kickabout with my mates as i am disabled, but when i went to the school football training when i was younger i was always thought of as a RB, even though that is my natural position i am better at playing a DMC who fills in all the gaps and gets stuck in, like a makalele but without the passing

Yeah exactly. I suppose it depends on whether you class "natural position" as where you look most comfortable or where you play better. When I played youth footy, I was a "natural" centre back but played a Makelele role too. When I play CB I knew everything I SHOULD be doing but was crap. In the Makelele role I was a bit more headless but did a much better job there than at centre back. Which is my natural position?

Millie's example of Thierry Henry is a pretty good one I suppose. If the positions were classed the same as they are now in an old cm game when he was at Juve, he would be classed as a natural winger - that was his position.

If you ask now though, no-one will say that is his natural position.

I think players should be able to be retrained to a natural level in rare cases.

After all, it would be weird if Drogba was still just a natural right back and Makelele was a natural centre-mid.

And we've even seen Ballack's natural positions fluctuate in the last two versions. If FM can admit that they got a players natural position wrong then it must be possible for players to be retrained to that level in the game.

Otherwise they are saying its possible in real life but not in the game...

I meant if Makelele was a natural attacking mid. Not centre-mid.
