I had decided to wait for the first patch to be released before starting my first career game on FM05, but i got impatient
All leagues from England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland selected, on huge database size.
Season 04-05
Altrincham begin with a playing squad of 24. 60k in the bank, a 6k tranfer budget. Just one keeper, an abundance of DRs, and what seems to be a lack of quality and/or depth in every other position. 2 coaches, 2 scouts and an extra phsyio are signed via placed ads. The scouts find many players of questionable ability, 12 of them are signed permanently, while i only manage to ship out one.
We score just one goal in 5 pre-season friendlies, and record our first league win after 7 games. Things improve from there on. We jump second after 17 games, and we need another 18 to leapfrog over runaway leaders Worksop. The rest of the pack were about 10 points behind, so the first spot was between us and them.
A bad patch of form for Worksop allows us to escape by 6 with 6 to play. We clinch promotion with a game to spare.
1st Altrincham W25 D9 L8 GD87-51 Points 84.
Our 2 strikers combine for 57 goals in all competitions, while the midfield, almost entirely occupied by freebies, was satisfactory. Our defence sucked throughtout the season, but then again it always does .
FA Cup: We play 5 games for the price of 3, a 4th Qual. Rnd replay at Barnet's place is proven to be fatal.
FA Trophy: We reach the 5th Round, our reserves cause some trouble to Carlisle but are brushed aside 3-1.
Our few encounters with CON National sides show that we'll do well to survive next season.

I only manage to sign 2 new players during pre-season: an experienced DMC and a young skillful AMRL. I also got two interesting friendly offers: PSG  and Bristol City. Each of those games generate £60k
On with the real season then. Soon it became obvious that we couldn't challenge for honours with the current lot of defenders, even though we had the best attack in the league. A good run in the last ten games rewarded us with the 10th place, 11 points short of a playoff spot. Stevenage and Halifax were the best teams in the league and fully deserved promotion.
10th Altrincham W17 D10 L15 G.D. 77-70 P61
FA Cup: We beat Blyth 6-1 away in the 4th Qualifying Round and face Millwall at the Den. We made 70k out of gate receipts, but were shown the difference between professional and amateur football in the field. We were losing 1-0 after 42 minutes, but a second goal for Millwall at that point led to a 5-0 half time soreline . We lost 6-0.
FA Trophy: We reached the 5th Round again to face Hornhurch. A scintillating 3-3 draw at home was followed by an unfair 3-2 defeat.
A satisfying season all in all, i was let down by our defence though. The young AMRL was our best player, while last year's strike force combined for 37 goals, 20 less than last season.

That's about as shocking as Ian going over wage budget.
And I bet you'll sign more strikers before defenders.

Now that just wont do, send out the scouts to bring in a 6 yard poacher and maybe a few more strikers.

You don't need to encourage him further, bigpants...
I'm afraid Kostis always goes this way. (As shown on the team I inherited from him in the Denmark Online clan game... My 14 yo defenses are way better than the ones he had as first choice)
