Plus, don't forget that a player's visible stats dictate what he'll be like as a player far more than his 'ABILITY' and 'POTENTIAL' do.
Example, in 03/04 I trialled an Iranian striker for a week. All of my coaches said he was rubbish. With a week before the first game of the season and only one decent forward, I offered him a contract - my Ass Man told me he wasn't worth signing. I ignored him.
Two seasons and 50-odd goals later, my coaches and Ass Man were still saying he wasn't good enough. Fact is, though, his stats made him a good player for my tactic and although his Ability probably wasn't much good (as his non-striking stats indicated), that didn't matter.
