Southend United, Braintree, Hornchurch, Tiptree, Great Wakering, Billericay, Canvey Island, Chelmsford, Basildon, Thurrock, East Thurrock, Dagenham & Redbridge, Leyton Orient, Burnham, Colchester, Dartford, Egham, Forest Green, Hadleigh, Maldon, Romford, Southend Manor, Stansted, Stratford, Tilbury, Yeading, Staines Lammas, Rayleigh, Hendon, Grays, Greenwich, Brentwood, Boreham Wood.
These are the teams I am considering as being nearby in the lower leagues for my Braintree game, though some people may care to argue, or wish to point out any errors.

Well, You are of course forgetting the most local team to Welling.
Erith, who groundshare with Welling at Park View Road.
Welling is base in Bexley which is inside the M25, south of the Thames in Kent. It is near Woolwich, Dartford and Sidcup. Close by are NorthFleet and Gravesend. It is also near the Dartford Tunnel and Woolwich Ferry, which brings easy access to Thurrock, Grays, Tilbury, Dagenham and at the limits, Redbridge and Hornchurch. Beyond this I think your 'local clubs' become too numerous.
I think, given the scale of London, anywhere east of Croydon west of Rochester, north of Severn Oakes and South of Chigwell could be considered local enough to count.

As I said, this is just my list for Essex and the NE borders of London, as i'm playing with Braintree in Essex Adz, was just listing some clubs that he might also be able to pick from, just as a guide.
Most of the teams I listed are on or near the main train routes around Essex and East London, and thus viable for my poor little LLaMa scout and his piggy bank full of 2p's.

Thanks for the geography pointers.
My third season looks like it's going to be a repeat of the second, i've started terribly, and am flirting with last place well into october once again. Do the boys have another tremendous run-out in them? we'll see... I did get my annual Hornchurch win out of the way, though... but that means a win for them on the way back if form holds. I don't think a single meeting between the two of us has seen fewer than 8 goals yet...

Update...
So, when the patch came out, I decided to restart my game, but after a brief try with randomly-selected Sutton I decided that I really wanted to go and finish what I'd started at Welling, so I started over again with Welling (none of which really makes sense, I know, but I seem to be forming an attachment to them... I even keep tabs on what they're doing out in the real world almost as dilligently as I do my beloved West Ham's tribulations)...
...It was very interesting playing again with the same team. The sqaud wound up completely different right from the first season as the scouts seemed to be going in totally different directions (and finding much lower quality, I might add)... and the squad I cobbled together on frees and loans for that first season definitely overachieved. Playing mixed form all season, they wound up climbing a few spots in the last month and claimed the final promotion spot, but crashed out in quite embarassing fashion right away.
My second season saw me bloat the squad with freebie players with potential and contacts under a hundred pounds. With delusions of grandeur and the insular short-sightedness which only an american could display I tried to repeat my so-called success without any talent from loaned players, and while I did find out which of my legion of pups could run and chew gum at the same time, I didn't fare too well in the standings. Playing poorly all year, we slowly but surely slid down from flirting with the promotion slots early to fighting off the relegation battlers, winding up in 15th, deep in debt, and remarkably, I didn't gett fired in the process.
Season three saw me clear house. Almost all of the players I'd taken on a "season-long trial" were on a one-year contract, so those that had drug me down got freed up to look for jobs at the local eateries and I was shocked to be able to sign a real quality player I'd loaned at the end of the previous season to cover an injury-induced gap on my left wing without breaking the bank. With a much more discriminating hand in the transfer market, I started off the year with only 18 roster players and a couple of loans - having sold or cut almost every player that was on the roster two years ago and finally getting together a squad that could play the game I wanted to coach (did I mention shortsighted arrogance?)... now, if only I could find a net-minder...
Season three got off to a see-saw start, but a couple of mid-season lucky signings (any player I hire who is worth the free shirt is a lucky find, I appear to be a terrible judge of skill and my scouts aren't that good) I was up into the top five for good by Christmas and finished second (though that was 10 points short of the automatic promotion slot!) and just managed to win through to the Conference with a one-goal edge in every round of the playoffs and my top three strikers all injured and out by the second round! (my utility AM/F RL played stunningly up front - and hasn't done a darn thing since)
Promotion, and predictions of relegation battles... The first thing I did was grab about a half dozen versatile backups (I love having players who can play two or more sides and two positions around, i've got D/AM RLC's and D/M RC's and AM/F RL's all over the place) despite not really getting much of a boost in the budget (the board is not happy with my wage budget these days, no they are not) - plus a couple of extra strikers, since just having four turned out to be a bad idea... and hey, I've got reserves now anyway, right?
So, it's now late January, and humble Welling, expected to go down, are second in the Conference, just three off the lead, and are playing famously... how? I have no idea. Actually, I do, goalkeeping. I loaned a freak keep who's only let in about 15 in all competitions to this point. my schedule is littered with 1-0 and 2-0 wins. The season before, I was having to win games 3-2 to get over, I can't imagine what my season would be like with my mediocre roster keepers at this level... and I don't want to think about what next year will be like without him (I can never afford his wage demands, even though his team only wants about 15k for him... and my board is unsympathetic to my desire to pay one player what the rest of the team are making at the moment - they just don't get it, do they?)...
I'm really getting a kick out of this season, though, knowing full well that there will not be another like it and that there is going to be one heck of a backslide next season - but for now, I have crowds in the thousands, the club's in the black, the media is paying attention to us, and a few deserving players are seeing their values shoot up and I will be able to move them on to big clubs where they belong soon enough...
