What a roller coaster of a second season. First 14 league games without a win. Conversely, we could not stop winning FA Cup qualifiers. Ultimately got into the FA cup proper and survived until the 3rd round, our draw ... Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Predictably it was ugly, I think our lads suffered from a good bit of stage fright as they had never played before more than 1000 people at one time, but my oh my, how the board enjoyed the windfall from that gate.
As far as the rest of the season went, a late run in the league allowed us to finish in 19th, with a 1 point margin that was all that kept us from the drop zone.
The squad gelled toward the end of the season, the back line finally started listening to our captain, the grizzled old vet I brought in the summer before, but we still surrendered 78 goals by year end. The board has (surprisingly) been quite generous with the Chelsea windfall, updating our training facility, and granting a transfer budget of a whopping $65K, a virtual embarassment of riches in Conference South. The quest begins for a competent keeper and another fullback. On to year 3 and the hope of a finish in the top half of the table.
Have not been able to coax any competent keepers or full backs despite my willingness to pay a competitive wage, the stigma of being a semi-pro, obscure squad is apparently a greater to them than the blind ambition of the gaffer. So now I must revise my search to include a competent keeper and back who have high gullibility ratings!
We got our keeper! But our playmaker, my fleet of foot left winger (Owen Fancyboots), has been poached by a league two squad who made me an offer I couldn't refuse. There is no way that a team in Conference South can say no to $100K quid, regardless of how much you like Mr. Fancyboots.
Season 3 has started on a good note as we have lost only one of our first five. Do you have any idea how much more effective it is having a professional keeper in goal rather than a plumber? Goals conceded have dropped by about 60% so far, this may be St. Albans year to aspire to a top of the table finish.
Commenced the season winning first 4 of 5 and remained in the top spot until the game glut that is December. Our lack of team depth led us to a decline to 6th. Cup runs were a virtual nullity, out in the 1st round of the FA trophy and 3rd qualifying round of the FA cup.
The lack of form in December led to a changing of the guard on the backline. Our captain, "grizzled old vet" started looking more and more like "hobbled old cripple". The decision was made to go with youth and sacrifice our field general. A good choice overall as our long and lanky 18 year old beanpole, did a right good job in the middle.
Finished in 2nd and made it through the playoffs. Encountered the Conference North-South playoff bug and decided I had 2 choices, abandon the game (at least temporarily) until the patch comes out, or make a leap of faith and turn the reins over to the assistant manager and go on a weekend holiday. I decided to trust my right hand man, and was pleased to see that we advanced on penalties afte a 2-2 draw. On we go to the Nationwide Conference!

When you reach the playoffs the game won't continue, so you must either wait for the patch or let your AssMan handle it.

This is only when teams from different leagues face each other in the playoffs, IIRC.
