Ok, this is my first proper go at LLM. I've taken the reins at the charmingly-named-but-geographically-confusing Oxford Utd Stars in the Northern Irish Second Division and am now at the start of my third season. After taking over a squad of just 14 players, all under 21, a staff of 1 half-decent goalkeeping coach, a physio and a rubbish scout, no transfer budget but a bit of slack in the wage bill, I felt I had a challenge. I concentrated on bringing in a couple of decent backroom staff and some experienced players, but with so little cash, I had to pick the best of a bad bunch of scouts and gave two of them the Ass Man and first team coach jobs. After recruiting an extra scout, I managed to acquire a few older players with Premier League experience, and a handful of younger, more talented types after trials.
Since then, I've had two seasons of decent performances. I've been tipped as 'not far behind the favourites' by the bookies, and I've managed just that, finishing fourth and fifth, with an Intermediate Cup semi-final appearance, a couple of higher division scalps and my star striker in the NI U-21 squad. I've also stayed loyal to my new-found LLM roots, turning down a very attractive job at Prem side Portadown, as well as a relegation dogfight with Cliftonville.
The end of the 05-06 season saw my entire 27(!) man squad approaching the end of their contracts, allowing me to get rid of a lot of deadwood, leaving me a squad of 17. Now on the cusp of my 3rd attempt to break into the First Division, I think I have some quality forwards and a creative midfield, but a defence like swiss cheese. I managed to persuade a German coach to impart his country's efficient manner on my back four, and brought in a couple of handy defenders and a new keeper. Now the only problem I have is finding replacements for my two best players, who at the age of 37, are starting to creak and are calling it a day at the end of the season, oh, and getting promoted, I suppose. Here we go again...
I too started with Oxford Utd Stars when they werew the only team to offer me a job (Playing all leagues in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and N Ireland). I seem to be doing better than you have, but not by much, I think the difference is a 17 year old GK my scout found unsigned. He has averaged 8.13 for the first half of the season. Good luck with them.
