I have just started out as Man U and I'm playing a 4-4-2 formation. Can anyone tell me what tactics I should use i.e mentality, creative freedom, passing style etc... cheers

You need to give more info. What players you bought, your first teamers, etc. If you like to create your own tactics for a greater sense of achievement, read the tactical bible for great information and help. If you like to try other people's tactics, then look around on this forum and choose some to download. I personally prefer crazy gra's 4-2-2-2. Won EPL first season with Man City.

I read an article about it and was intrigued, but when tried got hammered... I don't think my side is ready for more than 4-4-2.

BTW, with a new game the starting tactics are the one's used by the former manager?

4-4.2 it's a good starting point. the experiment comes after a couple of games

in the preseason you can experiment a lot and start building from there
