Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Defensive Set Pieces

I am happy with my tactics but am frustrated by conceding from set pieces. For example in a close game I was winning against Huddersfield and 2 free kicks in the last 8 minutes were stuck in the top corner even with a man on the post.

Is the key to defending in preventing the free kick in the first place somehow, setting up the defence well or does the goalkeepers stats influence it at all.

I would like to hear any ideas on defending corners as well

I have trouble defending corners ifk and dfk as well.
Sometimes I swear when your playing against a superior team and your tacic is doing the business the AI then decides to 'even it up' by way of a set piece, normally in the dieing seconds!
Or am I just being cynical.

But then again world class players can have this habit of banging a free kick in and earning a draw/win when their team is up against it.
Beckham, England v's Greece 2001 or Man Utd's 2 corners in injury time against Bayern Munich in cl final!

2nd vs 3rd. 5 mins injury time. 5 mins and 10secs coventry get a corner and score to win 1-0. I think I'll start a new game cos this has been story of my 2012/13 season with Darlington

First thing I do is to look at where the FK is from. If you get a lot of freekicks against you on the flanks, that you are able to cope with, you dont have to do too much. If these are getting you into trouble, take a look at what kind of trouble it is. Is it the man-marking that is bad? Do your players loose battles in the air?

If those are the case, try changing the setup of who is marking players etc.
If it still causes you problem after you have changed your instructions there, I recommend to try and avoid the freekicks. Take the players that are causing the dangerous freekicks down from hard to mixed tackle, or from mixed to easy.

If you are getting a lot of shots against you from freekicks outside the area, which is causing your keeper trouble, you have to adjust the numbers of men in the wall. The more men in the wall, the worse it is for the keeper to see where the shot is going, and he will mostly just stand still, watching the ball fly past him.

If that doesnt help, change tackling instructions again for those who are causing the dangerous freekicks.

Hope that is helpful

(only 3 more to go now...)
