It seems that you can't win in FM08 unless you have 3-5 different tactics, micro tweaked for every single possible variable and 44 players for each eventuality.
Are the days of having one system and simply upgrading to the best players you can get and tweaking your mentality/marking for away games gone then?
I don't enjoy it much constantly changing the tactic and I really can't be bothered to sit through entire games of extended highlights. Not when a season could take a month of real time ..

One tactic done well - no longer valid approach? Post #2
i use only one tactic and it seems to work fine, i think the important thing is that your tactic can attack in a variety of ways, if you tactic is one dimensional then this is where (i think) the problem comes. if you have a tactic that can do this this you should always be able to score and the oppo manager wont be able to set his team up to deal with a specific threat.

Spot on, IMO.
My tactic work just as well away and home, against strong and weak teams.
That said, there is three settings that I might change depending on what I see on the pitch: Tempo, Width and Defensive Line.

I find that you can stick to one tactic and slightly tweak it when you have to change the starting lineup.
Basically, the individual player instructions are going to be different for each player.
If you drop a winger who has 18 for dribbling and 18 for pace, for one who has 10 for each, then you are going to have to change the settings, maybe reduce the "run with the ball" from often to rarely, and utilise his better stats. He may be a great passer/crosser of the ball, so instead of having him with his head down running at the full back, have him whipping in crosses from a deeper position.
this won't affect the layout of a tried and tested tactic, but will tailor it to suit whichever players are in the side at a given time.
