Just joined the forums despite being a regular playing CM/FM for years and years. Anyway, only got round to buying FM just before Xmas and here's the story so far.
Weymouth:
Decided to start at Weymouth partly due to their involvement in the recent football documentary on BBC2 and because I knew they had a couple of former Oxford United players.
Initil expectations from the board and fans were a moderate mid-table finish, to which I duly obliged. Despite having a reasonably good squad we struggled early on using a trusty formation which saw us shipping goals for fun, mainly it seemed because of my central midfielders failing to track back. Anyway, a couple of signings and a change of tactic saw us climbing the league (although in the mean time we went out of every cup in the first round).
Unfortunately though despite this mini-recovery we kept stuttering and having threatened to make the playoffs in the Conference South for a month or so the season ebbed away and the club finished just below mid-table.
Not a problem I thought, I'll make a couple of shrewd summer signings and we'll be promoted automatically the following season....or not. The board weren't happy with the finances at the club and so decided to make my maximum wage allowance a paltry sum. The result? No shrewd summer signings.
The season started and yet again, more inconsistency, more frustration, more slamming of fist on desk. Then, the change in my career. Hereford sack their manager and I'm muted as being a possible candidate. Excellent I think, the chance to progress to a bigger club (one of the things which frustrated me at Weymouth was the lack of ability to pull in a crowd down there). So I threw in my application and two weeks later I'm gaffer at Edgar Street.
The club are in turmoil, trying to avoid relegation with a great big debt hanging over the club. The one saving grace however was the availability of a nice bit of cash for player wages. I gave it 4/5 games to assess the squad and then went about strenghtening via a few free transfer signings and a couple of loans. Excellent I think, success! We're climbing the table rapidly. Ah, hold on, nope, we're now heading back down the table. In the end we avoid relegation by 3 points.
The summer saw me cut the squad from 25 to 18 players in a bid to reduce outgoings. I've also released a lot of crap from the squad and bought in one or two good players.
Two games into the season and two draws, we'll see how we go from here....
Life at Hereford carried on as it had ended the season before, reaking of inconsistency. Despite having the personnel who I thought had enough ability to cruise to a mid-table finish we struggled to get away from the relegation zone and by Christmas the Bulls were flirting with relegation big time.
Then came a bolt from the blue, Peterborough have sacked their manager and the press speculate that I'm hot favourite for the job. I reply to the media that yes I'm interested despite them being 2nd bottom of League 2. The board don't take kindly to this and 5 days later I'm sacked.
Peterborough offer me the job and here opens a whole new chapter....
