Not bad. Their mentality, like the rest of the team, is usually quite low, they don't make forward runs that often and they're set to tight marking, so when they take up their defensive position they tend to pick up the winger.

The temptation now is to alter these tactics to suit the Cleon/wwwfan hybrid system. Only I'm going to feel like I'm ruining the game. Maybe some time out.

Anybody still trying this? I've got a coaching magazine that explains this whole system, well at least as far as I can tell because it's all in Italian. Here's a couple of screenies: One Two
Anyone speak Italian and want to do some translating?
If anyone wants it, I've got it in pdf format and could probably upload it somewhere, it's about 3mb.
Anyways, I tried to make this awhile back using your old fm2006 thread on it and some other dodgy internet translated stuff I found on the web.
The shape I came up with looked like this: 3-3-4
Worked okay for the few months I played it, might have another crack at it after reading this thread.

Goodyfc2 - Sorry to stray off topic but any chance of posting your Van Gaal tactic?
Have you got any articles or further descriptions of his style that you could link to, ceefax?

After a brief sojourn into Dutch 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 land, I'm returning to this.
I have a feeling that it'll be the same old story though - almost any tactic you make without fullbacks is incredibly fragile against decent wingers because the game doesn't seem to like doing wingbacks too much.
Still. Keeps me occupied.

Hi Gabi - while you were typing that, I was invading your other thread!
The most obvious way to interpret Glerean's diagrams is the way shown above, with DC, DC, DC; MC, MC, MC; AMC; FL, FC, FR. However, with that shape, the outer midfielders would have to close down the wings extremely well, which the game does not provide for. This means that you either have to play ML, MC, MR, or have wingbacks.
It's a bit of a headache, to be honest. I keep telling myself that there's some combination of closing down settings which will get it to work.... maybe there is.

Err, actually I seem to have found it. I've got Marseille throbbing away like nobody's business, and not a leaky wing in sight. I'll test it a bit more.
