How many of you play an AMC just behind the strikers?

I've tried a few formations that use one, and every time, the AMC just gets isolated for the whole game.
He'll only attempt about 15 passes in a game, compared to the 30+ of most other players.
The central midfielders just seem to bypass him.

It's a shame, because with my Valencia team I have 3 excellent AMCs, but at the moment I can't really get any of them playing well.

One of them has 20 passing, flair and creativity, so you'd think he'd be some kind of goal making machine, but since he never gets the ball, he can never set up my strikers anyway, and the only time he ever gets more than a 7 rating is if his 18 long shooting gets him a goal.

Give your AMC a barrow so he will be more involved in midfield. Set him to run forward often and run with ball (if he has good dribbling attributes, which he should have) and set his long shots to often if he's good at them.

Considered playing just one striker?

If you play him in a AMC position i dont think you should give him forward runs often. He would then run into the box to often, and he will have a hard time controling the game from that position. And if he is the playmaker type with good long shots he is better of staying outside the area where he can pick out nice passes and go for goal with a long shot.

Depending on his skills and how you would like to use him (this is for a AMC playmaker) i would give him a playmaker role, through balls often, forward runs set to mixed or rare, long shots to mixed or often depending on his skill in that attribute. Run with ball i should set to mixed or rare, i dont want my playmaker to try and get by his defender all the time, he should try to dictate the play and pick out other players and set them up in a good attacking position. He should also have a lot of creative freedom so you encurage him to be the creative force in your attacking build up.

But as i said it all depends on what his strength are and what role you would like him to have. If he is more of a shadow striker, with good finishing and other striker attributes then i would set forward runs to often so he get in the box more often to finish a attack of, remove the playmaker role.

Well that just some of my ideas on how to set him up.

There's a reason why I may put a barrow on my AMC in answer to your first paragraph. And the instructions which you gave, forward runs set to rare, run with ball rare, long shots rare, those instructions seem more appropriate for a MCd/DMC.

Sometimes I like to play a 4231 formation something like this:

ST
AML AMR
AMC
MC MC
DL DR
DC DC

If you play a wide game wÃ*th short passes the AMC should get a lot of the ball with plenty of options to pass. He should also be able to get some goal off the wingers.

What are you talking about, i never gave that instructions you wrote, this is what i said.

Why are you saying that i set the following instructions:

Forward runs: rare
Run with ball: rare
Long shots: rare

When they acctualy are:

Forward runs: Mixed or rare
Run with ball: Mixed or rare
Long shots: Mixed or often

And i tried to explain why i choose these instructions, its all depends on if i whould like to use him as an amc playmaker or an shadow striker.

Perhaps i should explain again why i find these instructions work best for me.

Forward runs:

If i play with a amc playmaker i want him to stay outside the box, dictate the play and pick out the strikers and wingers with nice through balls thas why he has throgh balls set to often. He does this best if he stays outside the area where he gets room to act. If he is to far into the box as he will be with forward runs often he wont have the space to pickout nice through balls and the setting wont be effective at all. And if you put forward runs often and longshots often as you suggest, that is a bit contraditory in my eyes. In order for long shots to be effective he needs to be outside the box right? They wont fill any funtion if he is inside the area and six yard box all the time.

But on the other hand (as i wrote in the first post, that you obviously didnt read or understand) i said, if his role is to be more of a striker (shadow striker) i would set forward runs to often so he gets into the box more often and go for goal. But for this he need more striker like attributes then playmaking attributes.

Run with ball:

Reason i dont want him to run with the ball to often is the following. If your playmaker has very good dribbling skills i dont go higher then mixed for run with the ball. Reason for this is the following, if he fails to get by his defender then the opposition is in a very good position to launch a counter attack at you, everyone knows that loosing the ball in the middle of the park is the most dagerous thing to do when your team is going forward. Thats why i dont have him higher then mixed (but most often at rare). The wingers in my team are the ones that should try and beat the defender, and if they loose the ball at the flank it isnt as dangerous as loosing it in the middle, because the defender will most probably tackle it to a throw in when a player at the flank misses his dribble. And they will be in a bad position to launce the counter attack if the fullback gets the ball from the tackle, since he is deep down at his own flak. It would require som sort of magick to pick out a player high up at the opposing flank and that pass will be like 50-60 yards long at least, so the probability of him to succed is little. If they on the other hand win the ball in the middle of the pich in front of the area the player that won the ball has a lot more options to start and counter attack. Either he can play a short pass to a midfielder or forward that then starts the counter attack, or pick out a winger on the flank where there is most space on in order to launce a counter attack.

Long shots: Set to mixed or often as i said, and not like you said i did to rare. This works in conjunction with the forward runs setting, if the amc stays more outside the area and have good long shots attributes he are more likely to make use of them. If he has forward runs set to often he will be to far into the box to use his long shots effective. And i choose between mixed and often depending on his skills in the attribute.

And to the thing with the barrow, i belive the effect of it only kicks in when the team dont have the ball, so he will then play in a MC position while defending and thats good for the attacking build up. But he would still play in the AMC position when attacking and forward runs often make him play more like a second striker inside the box, not like a AMC playmaker. And the barrow dont reduce the effect of forward runs often if that was what you ment.

Well here are the idea why i set the insteructions up like i did. I would very much like to hear the idea behind having all the instructions set to often as you suggest.
