I have started my Villa game this morning. Currently at the end of September sitting at 2nd in the league with 4-1-1. Wins against Charlton, Newcastle, West Ham, and Reading. Draw with Blackburn at home and a loss to Arsenal away.

Highlight of the season so far is the 1-0 win against Birmingham in the Carling Cup 2nd round.

Players In:
Fabio Rochemback £6m
Eddie Johnson £2m
Landon Donovan £5m
Anthony Vanden Borre £2.8m

7 free transfers, youth players for depth.

Players Out:
Milan Baros -> Portsmouth £9.5m
Peter Whittingham -> Crystal Palace £1.2m
Jlloyd Samuel -> Rangers £900k
Mark Delaney -> Sheffield Utd £500k

Milan Baros transfer I had no control over, Portsmouth made the bid and the chairman accepted it since the offer was too good. I agree, Luke Moore looks much better than Baros.

I had a dilemma for which tactic to use. I have had success in 07 so far only with a 4-4-2 diamond but Villa did not seem suited for it. The problem is lack of an attacking midfield. Gareth Barry is not suited towards play the wing and they have no real right winger either. In the center they have a few talented central midfielders. Those being Steven Davis, Lee Hendrie and (atleast in my game) Craig Gardner looks quite good. Petrov can play from DM to AMC but seems better suited to play central midfield as well. They also have several decent central defenders, but none that are really great.

Because of this I opted to go with a 5-3-2 (or more like a 3-5-2). I'm using 3 central defenders, 2 wingbacks with arrows to ML/R, 1 DM, 2 MC's, and 2 ST's. I use the DMC and one ST as holders and the ST as a target man.

Tactic Overview

I brought in Vanden Borre to play RWB which means 2 of my best players are the wingbacks. Rochemback brought in to play DMC and also because of his free kick ability. Donovan was brought in to play the target man / holding forward along with Pablo Angel. Eddie Johnson to play the all out striker with Luke Moore.

So far its been quite successfull. Borre and Barry have been brilliant, Borre leading with assists. Striker has been a surprise, Moore was going to be my #1 but coming off the bench Eddie Johnson has scored more than Moore.

I'm Villa too, good job selling Baros, I did the same (for much less money though) and brought Iaqunita from Udinese for only 6mill and he has scored loads

Seems like your system is doing well, Donovan is a good signing, but I'm not sure about Rochemback, how's he performing for you?

Rochemback has been very solid. Funny you should ask of him though, I just won the best game so far as the Villans. A 5-1 win against Liverpool in Anfield, Rochemback was man of the match with a goal (from a freekick, which is one reason I got him) an assist (again, a freekick from his foot to Barry's head), 6 int's and second most completed passes with 23.

All of the signings have been great so far with the exception of Donovan. Stats wise, hes been good, but watching the match engine he seems to ruin many chances with his lack of aerial ability. He did win best goal of the month though, with a goal against Arsenal where he skinned 3 defenders and nailed it into the corner from a tight angle.

Donovan was great with my Osasuna side, which is why I brought him to Villa, but I was playing a 4-4-2 diamond with short passing there. Here I'm using more direct passes so hes not as effective.

I'v stopped using a target man option so I'm hoping that will help, as when he is the target man everyone seems to lob the ball to him instead of beyond him even though I set the option to run on the ball.

Iaquinta, thats a nice signing. I didnt think Aston Villa would have had the reputation to get him.

How does Gavin McCann play in 2007 game? He was always very dependable, if not great, in earlier games.

I thought you would get a bit of cash in the January transfer window but only got 1 Million. Mr Lerner not dishing out his millions in this game is he.

To be honest, McCann hasn't played too much for me. Rochemback has been extremely solid at DMC and Gardner has been coming off the bench to play MC as he has very nice attributes for his age. McCanns' attributes aren't that good for me either except his mental. McCann has only played because Petrov keeps getting hurt, Hendrie is hurt long term and Davis had a suspension for 2 games, otherwise he would probably not have played any league games so far.

So far in January McCann has played in 9 league games, 6 of those off the bench. Then 2 cup games. He's averaging 6.63 in league games and 8.00 in cup games.

Yes same here, I got 1.7 mil in transfer fee's in the Jan window, and had 1 mil left over leaving me 2.75 to work with.

Personally, using the assistant man filter, theres few players on there I'm interested in and all my bids are rejected for them.

Instead I'm going after expiring contracts, working out a deal with Ben Arfa right now and offered a contract to Soldado but when I released a story that I was interested in Soldado he said he would not like to move to Villa so that may be out.
