Ok first post in this Villa section. Im still in season one and have won the leage and am at the top of the premiership and it looks like im there to stay as only a few games left until season ends. Liverpool and Arsenal are tied for second place imo. I have the same squad really apart from buying Farfon but sold him to liverpool for £7.5 mil in the middle of the season. I have recently bought Park Ji Sung for 5.5 mil and he has done wonders for my team also.

Hello everyone, nice to see such an in depth disscussion about Villa, just wondering how my team sounds. Only been in the job for about 7 months, so have not made too many radical changes to the squad, but in the lofty heights of 4th in the league and only 10 points off the lead. This is my team as it stands so far, I play a 4-2-3-1 with 2 DMC's and 3 attacking midfielders. So here it is:

GK: Tommy Sorensen
DR: Aaron Hughes
DL: Gareth Barry
DC: Gary Cahill (fantastic player, 7 goals in 22 matches as well)
DC: Olof Mellberg
DMC: Gavin McCann
DMC: Luis Ernesto Perez
AMC: Stillian Petrov
AML: Andres Guardado
AMR: Vyacheslav Hleb
FC: Eddie Johnson (absolute legend, just 1.5M and already listed as one of the clubs favoured personnel)
Subs: Angel, Agbonlahor, Aogo, Ridgewell, Berger

As you can see I have not brought too many players in so the set of players I have bought are gelling nicely and I am starting to see some results. Just beat Arsenal 2-0 away and into the 6th round of the FA cup after beating Birmingham 2-0

PS: Eddie Johnson is a must buy, has an average rating of over 8 this season and is definetly going to get player of the year, his stats may not look to good but he is awesome.

i must admit to having read this thread with surprise whch has quickly turned into a serious bout of no-confidence (in myself). reading of success with the villa team, and my hat goes off to those people, is shocking because i've struggled more than i've ever struggled before. in my second season i'm fighting a relegation battle after finishing only 13th in my first.
no formation seems to work for more than half a dozen games maybe, theres no consistency and they couldn't retain the ball in midfield if there lives depended on it.
i've never considered myself an expert at this game but i did have some success in the past so i'm shocked at the idea of winning the CL, as a previous player wrote.
my current team:-
sorensen
placente DL
mellberg
ridgewell
jiranek DR
ceh ML
barry
petrov
meriem MR
iverson AMC
baros

playing a 4-4-1-1 attacking system

ceh and meriem are the playmakers with passing set to 'down both flanks'. iversen is the 'target man' with passing focused 'to head'

Just a few suggestions.

Try playing Barry on the left. I always find he plays better out wide than in the centre.

Play Davis, the best midfielder in the team.

One thing I found worked really well for me was setting one of the CM to play more defensive and the other to be attacking, also setting them so they swap positions.

Only other thing is get Luke Moore playing. By my 3rd season he was scoring close to 30 every season.

I take your point on board about Barry/Davis, I do occasionally alter to this, although its not always effective.
Unfortunately, Luke Moore has been out injured for virtually the whole season although Baros has put almost 30 away in his place.
Heres an amusing add-on to my post. My son also plays villa and, in his second season, is lying 3rd, including wins over united and liverpool. He doesn't do anything to training schedules ( i don't think he even knows where that section is ) and rarely changes from 4-4-2, he even watches the game at the fastest speed so he can't possibly see if anything is awry.
I, on the other hand, study the match, tinker with tactics and formations like a crazed Italian and have honed training schedules to extract the last ounce of potential from my players............I lie 13th.

Discuss.......
