I've had FM since it came out, pre-ordered and blah blah, but haven't managed to keep a game of any length going.
Game 1: Pau, French National. 1st season: Started poorly, but a few new players helped us on a good run - we finished 6th. 2nd season: deleted game after we started season with a pretty much identical squad but after 17 games had managed 3 goals and 3 points.
Game 2: Girona, Spanish 2nd Div B. 1st season: started well, the season got better and better and we finished 1st with a game to spare. Lost in the playoff final (bad luck, red cards and super****ingkeeper). 2nd season: deleted game after 10 matches with beefed-up squad with 5 points and 2 goals.
Which could all be seen as merely a bit of bad luck. Perhaps. I do play with random players and although it's been getting better as an option, it's still not perfect, but I wouldn't have thought that would be responsible for the crap I was putting up with. (I've made a clean install since and patched it).
Then, last night, playing in my 3rd proper game in the Portuguese 2nd Div B, I played a match I wasn't expecting to win (7 first-teamers out injured ) and which we lost 2-1 due to 2 late goals. After the match, I had a look at one of my opponents' DCs, because I thought he'd played well. My jaw dropped:
Tackling: 1
Marking: 1
Positioning: 1
Heading: 1.
This was a player who'd made 7/7 tackles and 12/12 headers during the match, with perhaps the worst possible stats for a defender.
Which (eventually) brings me to my point. It's clear that his Ability is reasonable, if not good. BUT, his stats are arsewater. So what's the important thing? While my scouts go around recommending players who look hopeless, who's to say they're not good?
It seems like something that's changed since the patch, because it was only after the patch that my 2 other games went belly-up. But it's really annoying, since scouts and coaches have very variable ideas of who a good player is and I'd like to be able to make an judgement myself - which is impossible, if his stats have nothing to do with how good he is .
Anyone else noticed this, or should I consign it to the "BUGS" forum, never to be noticed again?
I gave up worrying about stats of the opposition when I found that the AI defenders, with Pace 1 and acceleration 1, were always quicker than my strikers (and I always have quick strikers). I just ignore all this now and get on with the game regardless.
And, (after posting too quickly) when I buy players I do tend to buy the ones that at least look like they will make reasonable players.
At least their physical stats have to suit me.
I can't say I ever worry too much about potential ability. I need them now, not in the too distant future.
This has always been an important issue for me. It'd seem that i keep conceding goals to the worse strikers imaginable, or that my defenderds getr skinned by players with a dribbling rating of 5, or that their keeper plays a blinder but doesn't have a single rating above 7.
You can't but wonder at times...
I've always believed there should be no hidden stats for players, and that every single one of them (with the obvious exceptions of current and potential ability) should be revealed to you in depth of time. It's clear that we're not being treated equally by the AI, since the AI teams know everything about their players and tactics.
What i know is that you should be very Heady to win headers (that's Jumping that counts), and on low levels reasonable strenght, bravery and aggresion can earn you a lot of tackles.
I wouldn't go into ability issues, as this is way to far from LLM ethics. I guess
Changing tack very slightly to avoid going down "Tippy Street", I saw a similar effect turnip.
I was chugging along merrily, midtable side which I added to in the summer. I patched just before the season and promptly went until January winless.
However, what I did differently to you is moved clubs. As soon as I did that the game seemed more normal, and I've been moving along normally since then. A bit crap, but that's my MO, so I'm not too surrprised
I'm with Church in the "seldom worrying about the stats of my opponents" club.
As this has been diagnosed a ranting thread, can I add this:
Why is it when players score against you it is nearly always their first goal of the season (although it's the last match) or their first goal for the club (even though they have been there for 10 seasons)! WHY? It is always accompanied by the text 'That was a fluke' or 'He didn't mean that'! Why does my team always have to get the veterans bagging their first goal after they have been hit on the arse?
