The number of fluke goals is extreme. And so many of them look perfectly good until they tell you it was an accident.
It reminds me of the comment about the turnip head England manager's favourite midfielder (played for Sheff Wed, "managed" Stockport).
I think it was the bigoted tv commentator who said of this bloke that he "can control the ball further than you can kick it"

Ultimately it's down to self-judgement when buying players. If my scouts say 'shrek' is a world-beater, but looks like the mailman's stats, I won't buy. If the scouts say 'shrek' is a one-legged laundry-guy, but his stats looks good enough for my team, I'll buy.
Sometimes they turn out great, sometimes they won't play a game. You have to hope most are in the first category
However, it always annoys me something awful when a 5-longshooter hits home a 30-yard screamer. Or a dwarf beats my towers on a corner or whatever. Sure, it happens IRL too, but not this damn often |

Maybe my point isn't wonderfully clear.
What I was trying to say is that in the long-term game I had in 03/04, I knew whether a player would be worth signing once my scouts had waved their magic wand and revealed his stats. The tactic I developed meant that even though only 1 of my players was thought to be good enough to cope in Serie A (according to my wise-than-thou coaching staff), we were lying 2nd by the time I stopped playing.
To clarify this, if I saw that a player had 20 jumping, 20 heading, along with good values for other 'Ard Man stats, he would be good to thump the ball downfield to. If a player had good crossing and good dribbling, he'd be good on the wing.
I've not had this yet in FM.
Basically, I should be able to tell at a glance which of my players will be best in a given position from their stats alone.
Otherwise, what the f*ck is the point of having visible stats in the first place?

Talking of the same player, and a similar comment, this time from one of his managers. I think it was the Stockport, Southampton then Wolves manager while they were both at Southampton. In a post match interview, the interviewer said how well the midfielder had played, as he'd "covered every blade of grass". His manager said, with a straight face, "that's only because he had to keep chasing the ball, because his first touch is so poor" |
