Stu hit the nail almost squarely on the head. Northampton were touching rock bottom with the regularity of Montgomery Clift (respect if any of you get that one) and Thurrock were in a playoff position, but more importantly The Cobblers play in maroon and The Fleet in green.

Realism, Stanley, is subjective. I reckoned that it was pretty realistic to skip one Division at that point in my career, I was heading for the Conference, as were Northampton, so it made sense for me to take them over when they approached (I didn't apply). I had as much chance of going down as Linda Lovelace (I'm dragging them out today), and it was a wee bit of luck and faith in the...signing of as many frees as my scouts found...that kept us in League 2.
