I'm using a PC to make graphics with PS , what is so special about using MAC?

I know from my experience in newsgroups and forums that things can get heated up pretty quick when it comes to comparing operating systems, although I don't expect this to happen that easily on this board

Your opening up a whole can of worms here. Personally I use a mac because, although I learned photoshop on a pc, my schools graphic program was based on the mac OS. Personally i find it easier to use a mac and find that most Graphic design positions and printers around my area (northeast) look for people who use mac or mac formatted files. Although PC's used to be inferior for graphic work, the new p3-p4 systems are much better and handle graphics much better. Nowadays it's more preference but you will find that most graphic houses in NY and Boston rely on on MAC. This is just my experience.

I use a g4 400mhz 384mg ram at work on 9.2 & a 600mhz ibook 12.1 640mb ram and X.2 at home.

wouldn't trade them for the world

Guys i've seen the replies here, and don't think there's any kind of 'flaming' going on. And i don't think there will be, because the members here are better behaved than that i believe.
So i've re-opened this thread so that the users here can voice for Samifox what they deem to be legitimate differences between PCs & Macs, as it relates to doing graphics.

Here's what i think...
Anyone with any experience in the graphics field nowadays will tell you, that yes, a lot of print & graphics houses still tend toward using a Mac for their work. But also that nowadays, with the evolution of ALL computers, graphics can very easily be done just as well an ANY type of system. Nowadays, it's the software that's making the difference, not the OS you choose.

So as was mentioned by 'quickly', it now just a matter of familiarity and preference. A lot of schools use Macs, and people just get used to using them. And that's fine. Whatever works, works right?

Ok so there's my 2 cents on this subject.
Remember, keep this topic within the GRAPHICS realm, and do not steer it toward technology related issues. That's not what Samifox is asking about.

Thanks for reopening this Mark. I agree that we could have a sane discussion. I personally cannot comment on the value of one over the other as I have never had the opportunity to use a MAC. However I will watch with much interest as I am very curious

macs have two big advantages when graphics are concerned: first of all they have a far better font management system (try out ATM on pc when you doubt my words), and secondly they have the ability to give folders different colours. This is a very handy feature as it gives people like me the opportunity to immediately see what's done, and where I still have to work on etc etc.
As for the apps themselves: I've never seen any app that exists for both systems and that had a really different feel.
I can't say anything about OSX, except that, just like WinXP it had problems with apps and with drivers. But when you're used to a pc and Windows, you can learn OS9 in four hours at the most (it *is* easy) and you're working in PS, Freehand, etc. the same day you first saw your mac.

The only advantage of PC is that there are lots of interesting graphical (3D included) apps that don't exist for the mac.

Apart from this: I do not see any use for this kind of question. Everyone with a minimal experience on the Internet (and if you join a forum you have more that this) knows that this versus that leads to, as Master Yoda put it so eloquently: "begun the Flame Wars have". We here are too cautious to step into this ratllesnake nest, but, be honest: what's the point?
Riding a European car or a Japanese one, being a man or a woman, a veggie or not, etc etc: the most beautiful gardens are those with lots of different flowers in them.

The printing industry is still using Macs for numerous reasons:

In fact Printing houses had MACs because Quark Xpress , and Photoshop didn't exist at all on PC!!!!... (it was the time of Win 3.1, and MACs had a real operating system with Color Management, Font support was superior ...)
Then the PC versions came... but it was cheaper for them to buy an upgrade on mac instead of a new license for PC (along with a new system, and peripherics compatible with it!!!) It was the era of Win 95, and his numerous bugs, compared to NT... hopefully there is Win2K and XP, more solid (and with Type one fonts support)

The print industry is also really slow to upgrade, some still use quark 3.31! they didn't upgrade their machines (the size of the docs didn't change, that much) so fast as photographers, for instance, who have bigger and bigger files, because they scan pictures at higher DPI or have a new multi million pixels cameras.
Look at the introduction of In- design , that seems more powerful than Quark! Also, I 'm wondering, when Quark will be finally ported to X when the print industry will switch to MAC os X
They would need to wait for drivers for their scanners, printers and other devices... I believe that they are always suspicious of most new technologies.On Print houses time is ALWAYS too short, they can't afford learning very different programs, operating systems...

The PC crowd was also providing them documents coming from Micro$oft office, without the fonts, or sometimes they used Freeware/pirated TTf fonts that caused peroblems at ripping/flashing, or Corel Documents that were not exactly Poscript compliant. So the Print industry was praising Type 1 fonts, that were at the beginning MAC specific... (the funniest is that the new Opentype standard is more based on truetype thean T1, but that's another story) along with the then Mac only programs.

Also, switching to PC is not easy, there are differences (the left mouse button, the crashs... crashs exists on both platforms, but the PC ones are different, due to the numerous hardware available for PC) so they don't want to switch to PC, and will say that PC = bad.
They knew mac problems, and where reluctant to learn the PC ones... thus they encourage the use of macs...

So the Truth that MAC are way better than pc is dead*... but it remains as a urban legend...
*the hardware was superior (SCSI drives, RISC processor...)now they use IDE, the PC processors are very powerful too, but the Apples still costs more...

The printing house in which I was learning (during school, as a trainee) was using PC... but the photocomposition /flashing house they are using is mixed... so the situation is changing, but slowly... slooooowwwwllllllyyyyy...
