I have a dilemma with my current game, and need some wise advice. I preface this by saying that I have read the header, and I have been lurking around here for a few months, so anything I say to anger you guys is not due to my ignorance of the rules, only my stupidity. So....
My second season in the game and I find myself moving from St. Alban's to Waterford United in the Irish First Division (if any of you haven't managed in Ireland, do so, it is as fun a league as I've ever managed in). Take over with only about 10 games remaining.
Move on to next season, my first full with the squad. Everything is going spendidly, we are five points clear at about the halfway point. Bear in mind that as a manager, I suck. I've been playing since CM3 and have only won a league title once. So this is spectacular. Then disaster strikes.
My game encounters a bug. It is the one where my wage bill all of a sudden jumps. It went from 8,100 in July to 32,000 in August. There is no fix for the bug, although the response from the Bugs Forum indicates it will be fixed in the next patch. I tried many different things to "fix" it. I try going on holiday through the change in months, etc. Nothing works.
Needless to say, I can't afford 32,000 a month in wages, so I can't play this game anymore. So, after hitting and throwing things for a while, I decide to see if I can do anything about it. I download an editor (take a deep breath, keep reading ). After a day of messing with it, believe it or not, I fixed it. I won't divulge the details because (a) I'm not proud of it, and (b) I don't want to encourange anyone else. But I didn't change anything other than the excess cash that is being added to my wage bill has disappeared, so my wage bill now adds up correctly. I think I fixed it in such a way that I am as sure as I can be it won't cause the game to crash. I played a few weeks further and no crash.
So, here is my dilemma. As I see it, I have three options:
(1) I can continue my "bug-edited" game
(2) I can wait for the patch and hope they fix it
(3) I can start over
Exalted ones, please advise. All input, questions, and flaming is welcome (and to varying degrees, appreciated). Thanks.
Hey Spflynn. As you have noticed, the forum header and the Rules and Guidelines thread specifically mention that editors are a no-no. They're not to be used in any circumstances.
This is not a confession forum either. We didn't need to know and didn't ask. You're free to use the editor or anything you like, just don't tell us about it.
Do with the game whatever you want. It's your game, you're supposed to have fun out of it. Just don't tell us about it, and don't start an update on this game here. The new patch should be coming soon i think.
I understand that editors are the spawn of satan, and normally I would agree. But in this instance, I honestly don't know if I should continue or not. Can't decide how bad a sin it is in this case. That's why I brought it up here. Ask this in any other forum and I would get, "Yeah dude, and change the stadium capacity to 100,000 and give yourself a few hundred million for transfers and you'll kick a$$." That's not what I'm after.
And I'm not questioning the ethics of LLM, either, I just think this could possibly be an exception to the no-editors rule. My intentions are honorable. But I wanna know what the regulars (and others) think.
I think I'd be inclined to sit on a savegame from before the bug until the patch is released. Start a new game to play now, and when that one has run its course, hopefully the patch will be out and you can revisit the original save.
Long-term stability is the big issue with the editor here. Especially as it isn't even the "SI Approved" (but not LLaMa approved) pre-game editor, but a third party one. You just don't know what might have been accidentally screwed up that could ruin the savegame a few months down the line. I can see where you're coming from, but I think collective wisdom and experience is that using an editor isn't worth that risk (aside from all the flammable uses)
It's a real pain when a bug kicks in - i know how that feels. No matter how honourable your (or anyone else's) intentions are though, the use of editors for any reason at all is banned.
Your current save is almost as good as dead - you're having second thoughts about keeping on playing it. If you start afresh, nothing tells you the bug won't kick in again. You haven't actually solved anything, but created even more problems to yourself. Hopefully it will be fixed with the next patch.
No worries, Mr. Moon, I've been around for a little while, I was prepared for your response.
As for the corruption issues, point taken. That was my main concern. As frustrating as it is right now, it would be ten times worse if the game crashed in another year or so.
