Finally worked up some courage and took over a lower league side. AS Gaz Metan Medias (Romanian Division 2, Grp.3) have welcomed me warmly and provided me with a genrous budget of 30k. The board and fans expect me to lead the team to a respectable league position but I'm a little more ambitious than that...aren't we all?
My first problem was the size of the squad; large and inconvenient. Out of 5 strikers only 2 seemed worth playing- barely. The defence seemed quite leaky, however I was surprised to see an ex 'Golden Boy' (Romanian international of the "Golden Generation" 1990-1998) in the line up. Having dispatched both scouts to Romania and Bulgaria respectively, I set about selecting the starting 11 in preparation for my first friendly...
Got through the friendly campaign decently, tied a couple, lost a couple and won one with 10 men for almost the entire game. Nothing amazing but I saw potential there. My scout in Bulgaria had come through however and I didnt even know yet how well. One notable signing was a decent young AM/RLC (my favourite postion[s]) and the other was a young Bulgarian striker who barely accepted my contract offer of 1300 p/w (maximun allowed by the board). I had sold golden boy to a Division 1 team for the sole reason that he was 36 and just didnt fit into my game plan, plus I needed money to fix the leaky D. I seemed set up front with a couple of new strikers and the bulgarian except that the garbage ones were refusing to leave (no clubs wanted them even for a fee of $0). I managed to get one defender to sign the day before the deadline and hopefully my starting eleven was set for the season. What I forgot to mention is that I was very excited about my GK who played his heart out every friendly I'd played him in, the backup didnt seem to shabby either.
Match Day 1: 3-2 with goals from the Bulgarian, the AM/RLC and one homegrown defender who scored on a free kick (that was a nice surprise). My star keeper unfortunately got a final rating of 5...
Match Day 2: Went down 1-0 early in the first and could've been worse if not for the valiant efforts of the keeper (no doubt making up for last game). Started to sweat in the second half and brought in the Bulgarian. All out attacked till he got a hat trick, final 4-1.
That's where I left it last night and I'm excited for the future, I may update, I may not, all I know is that I spent the better part of my morning lecture drawing and doodling formations/tactics...
easy all.
