Grey players exist IRL, as has already been mentioned.

Norwich's squad is so thin at the moment due to injuries that we have been unable to put out a reserve team of contracted players or available academy players. For the last few reserves games, a few local college players have been given a game (this is a popular destination for youth players who don't get pro contracts to go, so the club does know a number of them).
