Can the referees be given more intelligence?
For example, just now they wander around the park aimlessly in what to my eye seems like the rough path the ball took several seconds previsously. This leads to problems of defenders getting booked and having to walk half the park to get a card, then the game restarting with them out of position.
I just feel that this is a gold mine of functionality that SI are missing - by that I mean you can have the following:
* decisions missed because the ref couldn't see it, leading to...
* increased media arounds refs
* a positioning stat being introduced for referees
* ability to criticise a referee for them missing lots of items (linked to positioning)
* stopping the 'bugs' similar to the above mentioned
* not 100% difficult to implement as player logic and movement (I would imagine referee movement algorithms would be similar to the player ones - i do work as a programmer, so it's not exactly finger in the air guessing)
* refs having to rely on linesmen making decisions as they are unsure
I am unsure about how decisions on fouls are calculated at present, but assuming that (and I will almost certainly be wrong here), there is no logic around the referee proximity to the foul and the decision making process, the proximity of a referee to the incident can be included, as just now I have seen incidents where the ref is about 50yds away and still makes a call.
