Default Is success possible with 3 defenders and a DM?
And if so, what fundamentals should I keep in mind?

The reason I ask is I've found myself with a load of good DC's and DM's, yet no decent DL's or DR's.

Mostly I just want to play with 5 midfielders and 2 strikers but I'm not having much luck.

So is it my tactics or the formation (3-1-4-2)? Am I just wasting my time?

I would think that you would have problems with counter attacks and crossings.
Have you thought about signing Wing Backs or maybe finding a sweeper? Also maybe think about retraining some of your more adaptable DCs as DLs or DRs.
