I find this happens more often with full backs, but the point is that too often they leave the ball to go out for either a throw in or goal kick but an opponent will chase it, keep it in and sometimes have a good chance.
This can't be to do with stats as I see great defenders doing it, although I could understand if someone with poor decisions or concentration did it.
If it's to do with instructions, then I'm thinking a low mentality may mean they may be more prone to let the ball go. As for time wasting, I only have that high near the end of match if I'm winning by a goal, so I can't imagine it's to do with that. Either way, I find it happens too much. Possible bug?
It is crazy. You will often see a defender abandon his position to tackle someone that is already covered, yet he won't ever chase the ball to the line to make sure it's out. I've never actually seen the opposition get a ball that my defender has left, but I guess this is proof.
When ever I watch my defenders do something stupid or go way out of position I lower their creative freedom and they seem to stop being so reckless.
However little creative freedom might result in them not chasing after balls that they obviously could get to.
You might already be accounting for this, but I didn't see it mentioned above.
