Tactics & Training Tips

It's no use having a squad full of star players without a decent way for them to play their football.

Default Sweepers - Growing Your Own

I'm currently managing at Peterborough in League Two. I joined the team at the end of the 07-08 season, with just 15 games to play. Brought in a bunch of players in the close season and the team is off to a great start, in 1st place after 18 games.

But I know that if we get promoted, we'll have our backs against the wall in League One, and I'm assuming the only thing that will help is playing a sweeper system (or maybe it's just my facile rationalization, since I've been aching to play around with sweeper systems in FM07 since I got the hang of the new tactical setup).

Problem - not many sweepers out there. So, I'm training two of my central defenders to the position. In addition to the usual attributes I look for in central defenders, I wanted guys with good ratings in decisions, positioning, creativity, dribbling, and passing.

Has anyone else "trained up" their own sweepers, and what kind of results did you get?

I would suggest perhaps a DMC is a better starting point than a DC for training up a sweeper. I'd focus the training more towards tactical and ball control than a typical DC training schedule. Make sure the Sweepers have high positional sense to begin with.

i would agree with DandyDons1903 even without retraining many DMC make good sweepers. they have the passing and tackling skills you would need and always seem to work better than a DC in my experience although i would be interested to find out how your way is going and what kind of change you see

gunnerfan have you set up a unique training schedule for the players you are retraining? this may be a good way to advance the key attributes needed for these positions

Definitely DM. The best sweeper in the world played as a DM when on the ball (Der Kasier).

Yeah, shortly after I posted here, I thought about using a DM instead. I've just put one of my young DMs on the sweeper training program.

And, yes, it is a specific schedule for sweepers. I figure that I need to get them game time, as well, so I am trying to work that into my schedule. I may set up an additional friendly or two.

You can always let your reserves play your sweeper tactic to try it out for you also a good way to let him train without you risking too much
