I have heard a multitude of different explainations for setting up creative freedom.
Now I usually play a lower league side in either the Conference North or South.
I use to set a global creative freedom of 5. My logic was that I didn't have quality players so reducing the creative freedom would reduce them making costly mistakes.
Now what I found was that my teams tended to be good defensively, although in attack my strikers seemed to be being pick-up far to easily.
One game I forgot to set the global CF and it was left on the default of 10. My defence seemed less tight, but my strikers were getting more room.
My approach new is to set my players creative freedom with how attacking the player needs to be for my team.
Team = 8
GK + CB = 5
FB = 12
MCd + MR/L = Team
MCa = 12
FC = 15
This has made a dramatic difference to my FM experience.
One anti-tactic I propose relating to creative freedom is setting it in relation to the players creativity. I believe the confusion arises due to the name of the slider. I believe this should be considered how much the player moves from a his lined up position. By leaving my strikers on a global setting of rarely, I was allowing the opposition CB to have a whale of a time picking up my static attack.
