I am currently playing as Athletico Madrid and i am have a terrible time trying to keep possession. I have tried almost everything. I have tried to play quick, short passing and short, slow passing but nothing seems to be working.

I am currently playing a 4-4-2.

Try Narrow width, Short passing and Slow tempo.
With Athletico Madrid you can probably set a higher pressing too (at least at home).
Be careful with giving too many players the "often" setting for through balls.
Adjust Mentality up to 13-15 and move Def line up as well.
You might have to fine tune Mentality from game to game because higher Mentality does not mean higher possession but it helps keep things moving forward and hence shots on goal.
