I've actually just taken a gamble by selling one of my midfielders (30yo, played well last year) for 3 times his value to Beira-Mar. He wasn't listed, and they came straight in with that offer. But it was still less than 50k. I think I gain more by getting his quite large wages off the books. Time will tell if it's a mistake.
I don't think the U-24 compensation does apply in Portugal. But it sounds like it makes little difference anyway.

On the other hand, it could just be Portugal.
I've got a game going there, whenever my FM mate visits. Just checked the stats (only 1 season complete) and between the 2 teams, we've offloaded 22 players, while raising a princely £6k!

I found that with my last move. However, I wasn't trying to sell them before, and I bought four of them myself |

With regards to selling deadwood I've got mixed experiencies in FM. For some fringe players transfer listed, I have been able to get some money... Deadwood and surplus, on the other hand, have been nightmarish to get rid of.
Hail Frank for those short term contracts everywhere in this new iteration.

Short-term contracts leave a lot to be desired, too. Month-to-month contracts, the player just ups and leaves without joining another Club even when he's getting a regular game.
Arse.

In that respect, Portugal is no different from older versions, since short term contracts are not so prevalent. I have a backup SC who I'd like to keep, but think I'll have to sell as he has two and a half years on a contract at 1.6k p/w and won't renegotiate to something more in keeping with our current budget (which seems to be shrinking).

I've actually had pretty good success selling deadwood in FM2005. Playing in Scottish league, using a large DB with retain players selected for all the home nations, I use the non-league sides to take all my crap pretty effectively. I regularly ship out guys to Highland, South of Scot., East of Scot. etc. league clubs. Sometimes i have to take 0 pounds, though. Generally I get value (which is about 1000 usually ).I also find success offloading to N.I. teams.
