Default 'arrogate Town

In keeping with the current trend for posting one day within the exclusion limit for new updates (I'm at a course tomorrow) I'll fill you in with news of my new game.

FM2005, v5.0.3, Huge Db, Poofland Conf N&S up and Jockland 3rd and up...attribute masking on...not real player names.

Harrogate Town. Excellent strip, yellow and black stripes, no transfer funds, less than £10k in the kitty and very few players...but with Betty's Tea Room down the road what more could I wish for?

No AssMan (Scot appropriated in the first few weeks), one scout (two more signed), one physio (two more signed), and a player/coach (three more signed...coaches, not player/coaches).

AssMan led us to some friendly results, don't know how they went, not interested, and my scouts headed off for Jockland, UK and Ireland and the mono-statted original was tasked to tell us how our next oppo looked (have to keep the odd-laddie busy).

As is my wont, the majority of signings were Scots, with an Irish bloke and a couple of Pooflanders, by the time the first game came around we were numbering 36, squad-wise, £190 over wage budget, but I can live with that...dunno about the Board, though. 2 of that 36 were loanees.

Couple of guys, well three, deserve mention here I suppose. A Poofland D/DMC with stats way above Conference North level (few in the teens, but better than I'd seen in an LL Team), a Jock AMR and a Jock SC. The Pooflander was there from the start, but the Jocks were discarded by my scouts as being crap, but I saw something there the scouts missed.

D/DMC finished the season with the highest average in the league, SC top scored for us and the AMR was second to the D/DMC and played for Scotland U-21's (okay, that doesn't mean much but it warranted a mention )

Because of the precarious finances I decided to make an attempt on the FA Cup (although this was after a couple of fortuitous results in the early qualifying rounds with the reserves)

Let me show you why Cups suck Ass: (FA Cup result followed by next league fixture in brackets)

FAC 2QR A Gateshead 2-0 (H Stalybridge 1-2)

FAC 3QR A Hucknall 3-0 (H Hucknall 1-2)

FAC 4QR H Carlisle 1-1, Replay A Carlisle 5-0 (A Worksop 0-3)

FAC 1st R A MK Dons 5-1 (H Vauxhall Motors 0-4)

FAC 2ndR A Altrincham 3-0 (H Barrow 0-2)

3rd round draw, I even watched the bloody thing, waiting for ManUre or any EPL Team away...we get? Liverpool ( )...at home!!!

FAC 3rd R H Liverpool 0-2 (H Hinckley 0-1)

6 Cup ties (1 replay), 6 league losses, £46k in prize money.

Cups Suck Ass. Period.

League form in the early games was incinsistent to say the least. We suffered badly from a shoddy GK and a DC who seemed to be hypnotised every time an oppo FC came anywhere near him.

Some high end tinkering with tactics, the introduction of a 17y/o goalie and a reshuffle of the formation did the biz, though (apart from after Cup ties ) and we went through the rest of the season pretty solidly, in a defensive kinda way.

Attack-wise, if it wasn't for the SC and the D/DMC (playing MC) we'd have struggled badly.

Cut to the chase, and in a Hollywood finish, we literally qualified for the playoffs on the last game of the season, last kick of the ball. A draw with Barrow took us level on points but with a better goal difference than Kettering.

We cantered through to the Conference with a decisive tanking of Bradford PA.

Again, though, a bug which HAS to be sorted out is the offering of contracts to players including stupid minimum fee release clauses by some unnamed arsehole and the inability to cancel the offers even when you catch them in the consideration phase.

Fancy making the next update a bit longer......?

You seem to think I have nothing better to do than loiter around this forum every day reading lengthy posts and generally complaining about being bored!

Good work though, you have to love a last minute goal on the last game of the season. I had a similar situation in my game but won the last game and took the title.

KUTGBuying Scots Players

n.b. That has to be a bug in the game, I can't remember the last decent Scottish player!! I'm off to Bug forum

And I quote from the update thread

"Updates, by LLM definition, are short posts relating important happenings in your game.....

Game results should only be posted if they are unusual or important.....

A few lines describing your progress, or lack of it, are all that's needed."

I cannot see the disclaimer " unless you wrote the update rules" in that thread anywhere.

The results after the cup matches were, of course, due to your poor management skills and any connection between the results is pure coincidence.
Cups are the lifeblood of the LLaMa.

Ever heard the old adage "Don't do as I do, do as I tell you.", Church?

Every event in that wonderfully written piece of prose was pertinent, important and illustratingly educational.

Poor management skill goes without saying, btw, but twice is a coincidence, six times is a bug the size of one of Sigourney's mates

Nah, you just need to ban your teams from drinking after cup games! Obviously they are celebrating/comiserating with far too many beers afterwards

*Reminisces to a couple of weeks ago*
IRL, Harrogate played away at Worcester on a Saturday, and took 2 fans IIRC.

It was their new managers first game (the guy that sounds slightly like a headache cure), and he has a realistic chance of guiding 'arrogate to promotion. Hell, he even looks a bit like this
In the interview after the game, he adopted the style of a man 'who tells it like it is'

If it wasn't for his small squad, it would be the most authentic case of art imitating life EVER!
