What's worked for me in this regard (and for the record, I only retained in the nations with active leagues; UK & Ireland) because I can't deal with Huge database- is to retain players from all the countries I have active. So, with ALl poofland, jockland, NI, sheepland and paddyland leagues running, I used the retain for all these countries. Keeps the balance right, plus gives the non-league teams the players to keep stocked which is crucial IMO for LLaMa'ing. But I wouldnt do it if I could run the Huge DB

If you run huge database you have already a lot of players from your region in your game, that's a fact. But unfortunetly the game prefers the active leagues in loading in players. So if you have started a new game with huge databes and 5 nations in, the other nations in that region will have a lack of players.

Now you can argue that's how the game is programmed and works. Otherwise you can argue that putting in other players from nations out of that regions does balancing the database.

I really did some testing of this and in the end I must say that the game in general is NOT very balanced in that kind of game play. So, using the retain player option, can unblanace the game more or it could balance it.

In the end it's your decision. Pure realism would mean that all players in the region you add to the game are part of your game, but as the game does not work that way, it's up to you to decide what kind of realism you prefer.

When I first got hold of FM05,I played with only English leagues but I retained Australian players for two reasons
1)A mate of mine is on the database and I wanted to play him in the Aussie national team
2)Managing the Socceroos seemed like a fun idea
I only played for one season like this,so I didn't have a problem with Aussie players in the game but I did find that most managerial positions in England always went to unknown Australians and this soon made me start a new game
Andy,as Iajafer said, why not run a trial game the way you stated and give the LLM community the results so they can be used for future guidlines?

Ian, Figgy - I'll do that and report my findings, once I get my lappy back from the mender's.

I'm still finding this hard to get my head around though Notice that one of my issues that hasn't been picked up on is that I intend to retain Asian national players from non-playable leagues, eg Bhutan, Sri Lanka. I don't have the firepower to run a huge db; large is the best I can manage.

Just to answer one of your questions Ian, AFAIK there are very few non-Asian players in Asia, prolly one or two in Hong Kong [note to self: remember to load patch to fix missing HK league in 5.0.3 ], then there's Qatar. The league I do have some familiarity with is the NFL in India. They have a ruling max 4 foreigners in a squad/3 in match squad. The richer clubs do therefore have 3-4 foreigners, often Brazilians or Nigerians, but they are really pants players who are in India 'cos they ain't good enough for a league with a higher reputation. But let's not get confused here - I wouldn't be retaining foreign mercenaries playing in Qatar, only players with Asian nationality.

So, I'll give it a go. If the Malaysian league gets filled up with Bhutanese yak herders I'll realise the game is unbalanced

I actually had a Bhutani in one of the earlier CM's, he was a DMC and he was mustard

It was one of those regen ****-ups that gave him a name along the lines of "Hamish Sanchez".[/imaginaryregenplayernaming]
