With crashes, I usually download the latest drivers, and this might sound silly, but for a game or two it helped to reduce the hardware sound acceleration from maximum to standard. To do that, klick on start, run and type: dxdiag.
From there on you can access the sound tab with these settings. Warcraft3 has always been prone to give me a bluescreen with acceleration set to maximum, was the case on my old computer, appears to be the case with my new one as well. Might have to do with onboard sound chips, I don't really know.
About the vid card, I really don't think Footie's that demanding on vid cards. There's no 3D calculation to be made at all, and for 2D any supported card should totally suffice.
