I reckon a commanding captain is a real asset to the team.
I managed to lead Vauxhall Motors to promotion Conference National in the first season. Everything was going very well but in the second season, after I offloaded several aging players, including the captain, my team couldn't manage to scrape even a single win.
I fiddled with tactics, looked at training, did everything to motivate my players, we even lost games with 3/4 of the players on Superb morale to teams in the relegation zone!
I was well aware of the low influence factor in my team. The highest one being 11 (!) and he's a new signing youngster, I gave captainship to him.
After about 10 disastrous games, I became suspicious of the captainship issue, so I decided to remove nanual captainship and let the game name it. Guess what? An old boy with an influence of 6, very well on form last season, highly determined.
I don't really know how the game decides who is the most influential player in a team. There must be (hidden?) values and calculations behind it. I just figure the captain:
1. must be a well-repected member of the team.
2. possesses high Influence, supposedly to impose the tactics instructions on the team. (I was hopeless with any tactics I tried).
So? So... I signed McKenzie, a 31 yr old player, influence 20. Scout report 6 stars so he's pretty good, just a bit slow but he's an MC so that doesn't matter much.
Guess what? Guess what?
INSTANT IMPACT. On his debut, my team didn't even concede 1 goal, same old tactics. On his debut, my team attacked 3, 4 times more effectively, in numbers, that is, 9 shots instead of just 2,3 shots a game, and Shot on Target got a huge boost as well! On his debut, my very carefully tweaked set pieces worked again AND although the guy has low positioning and he is now header, he scored the only goal!!!
Interestingly, just a week after the new signing of Mc. Captain Kenzie, the COM-picked captain broken down in training, having suffered from a hip injury, now he's seeing a specialist, out for 3 - 5 months!
Team Stats Update:
Into the 2nd game, easy 3-0 win, 5 shots, 4 on target, 1 goal for direct freekick. Scorer? That guy with FK 20 who hasn't score even 1 goal since the beginning of the season! And he was the former captain!
Another 1-0 win with my Ultra Defensive Tactics.
Well, Millie, I reckon the role of the captain first and foremost is to insure your team carry out your instructions? So with a good captain (almost every time has a good captain by default from my experience), there's not much to talk about, but when the captain is not there, then we are in the situation mentioned, you being very careful with game plans and you have a decent bunch of players, your improve your team with quality signings, etc. nothing seems to work.
captains are very important IMO, mainly a personal opinion, but still, I had Alexey Yeremenko who had born leader as personality, yet when he captained the team we went tits up, but when my aging DM with 20 determination and 18 concentration coupled with 19 teamwork and 17 work rate captained everything seemed to work better, even Yeremenko played well
